What about hair length? Requiring men to wear their hair short is often said to look more professional, yet I have seen professional looking male attorneys with some pretty long ponytails.

edited to specify male attorneys

Men should be required to have muscles.

and penises.

"and penises."

And hair. Long thick hair. Sir grew his long for me despite preferring it short. He likes to see me drool.

And Madoff ass raped old people while wearing a suit.  Do you now want to propose that detectives no longer wear ties and jackets?

See what stupid analogies get you?

Don't try to blame me that you're not bright enough to understand that perceptions play a key role in hazardous situations.

Lamberti said it's modeled after U.S. military rules and that many other police forces nationwide have adopted it.

He said BSO followed suit after getting complaints from residents, and that he also blanched at seeing some deputies with "seven, eight earrings in a single ear," not to mention various eyebrow and lip piercings.

"They can wear what they want off-duty, but when they're on the job they have to take (the piercings) out," Lamberti said.

As for tattoos, workers will be required to cover them up while on duty. That means long-sleeves for those with lower-arm tattoos, and turtlenecks for those with neck tattoos.

Stupid question, but aren't gold caps on the teeth the "cheap" version of properly capped teeth where they use enamel to make it look like other teeth? Why would anybody want to have a gold tooth unless they can't afford the enamel version?

SweetDommes -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 11:09:27 AM)

I work in corrections at a re-entry/education facility, which means that the offenders can wear "street clothes" at the facility instead of uniforms. It makes my life a heck of a lot easier knowing that if I see an arm with a tattoo on it, it's an offender and not an officer (i.e. if I see an arm reaching through the med window and it has tattoos visible on it, I can injure him). If officers have tattoos on their lower arms, they either have to wear long sleeves or a bandage over it.

In my opinion, it's not so much an "us vs them" mentality, as making it easy to identify who is who. Just like dress codes at any other place - I am required to wear scrubs, minimal jewelry (one necklace, one bracelet or watch, wedding band - engagement rings are only allowed if the stone is "modest," earrings can't be dangling and no more than 2 per ear, etc.), my hair must be kept neat (although I can have long hair), and no visible tattoos. It would be similar at a hospital, extended care facility, doctor's office, or school/other workplace. It's a part of being professional and easy to identify in a hurry, if needed. It doesn't matter if it's a private healthcare setting or a government run one - 98% of the dress codes I've run across are identical for nurses. From my viewpoint, I don't see why it should be so different for a police officer. They are an authority figure, and how they present themselves will change how they are viewed. They also need to be easily identifiable, and the uniform isn't always enough. If all I can see is part of a person and not the whole person, I'm not going to assume that the person with a full sleeve tattoo of dragons and naked women is a police officer.

I do hope that none of the current officers lose their jobs - but at the same time, I understand the mindset behind the new rules.

That will work really well in the middle of summer in Florida. I can't wait for the headline, "Rape Suspect Escapes When Officer Suffers Heat Stroke During Chase"

They are talking about the decorative ones that serve no dental purpose.  I think that it started with Rappers.  And moved to gangs.  They are part of the whole "bling" thing.

Here are a few articles that I googled for you.  After skimming them it seems that it is also a health issue.  And that exactly pin-pointing their origin is difficult.

In the summer, the officers where I work put bandages over them. Most of the neck tattoos can be covered with the 3"x4" bandaids enough that it would be acceptable. Minimal risk of heat stroke from that. As for the full sleeve ones - as long as they can't be seen through the shirt, it doesn't require a heavy shirt to cover them.

LadyConstanze -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 11:28:42 AM)

I was only familiar with the dental prosthesises, you don't see them a lot in Europe, for a while elderly people from Turkey or former countries that were part of the Eastern Block had them, having needed a crown on a molar, I know that the golden ones are actually fairly cheap, since I wanted it enameled, it was about twice the price, I find them hideously ugly and always assumed the rappers have them because they couldn't afford proper ones and now wear them as sort of showing off that they come from a poor background, never thought of it as a fashion statement and I tend to avoid rap and hiphop as much as possible...

mnottertail -> RE: gold teeth might be banned for employees (1/28/2011 11:32:18 AM)

When I was a boy, many of the older folks of scandinavian heritage around here, and I also think the Finns,  used to outline their teeth in gold, not full grilles mind you, but outline only to show signs of wealth.

Gold is over $1300 an ounce.   So it is not cheaper... not the real thing.

How about you do your research just ONCE? For those of us who are too stupid to figure it out, you don't need an ounce of gold to cap a tooth, gold is easy to work with, ceramic is a lot harder to work with and needs to be burned.... Do you think dentists or dental laboratories are cheap?

Crown - FULL Porcelain (Zirconium) £800.00
Crown - Porcelain Fused To Gold £700.00
Crown - Full Cast Metal Crown £200.00

Copy and paste from a dental website...

Can you read the figures? So a gold crown is cheaper? Ooops, I forgot, yeah, you think education is useless because you don't need education to flip a burger... Tell you what, you go for your "expensive" gold crowns, the rest of us might not want to look like thugs from the hood and are possibly willing to pay a bit more...

You forgot that they do not use pure gold either.  That would be far too soft/malleable.

it is around 18 karat, though.  Unless its Wal-Mart.  LOL.

http://www.goldprice.org/scrap-gold-price-calculator.html

IF I used this thing right, the price for a troy ounce of 18k gold today is about $31.10.  A far cry from his $1300.
