We had a giant king size one, that when on high heated the bed so hot as to be uncomfy, after about 6 months of using it for bout 3-4 hours on h
high every other night or so it quit warming the bed so well, it now warmed it up at a Luke warm temp, bought a new one, a twin size, and it's been less than 6 months, and this one too, now on high never gets more than Luke warm.

They break (the wiring inside) and the heating elements can burn out

I have one I got for Christmas '09 and it still works as well as when I got it. But I have really babied it.
I make sure it doesn't get twisted or folded in on itself.

I have done my best to take care of all of the wiring, both inside the blanket and the cord.

In your case, maybe it's the brand, I don't know.

edit to add: If high made the bed too hot then why have it turned up so high?
and other stuff for clarity... .

I turned it on high to warm the bed up cause it gets really cold in here sometimes, then when I got to uncomfy turned it down. Then I just moved my legs to diff sides of the bed to avoid to hot spots. We always get sunbeam brand.

My blankies are always kinda tangled an stuff so maybe I am messing it up.

I would replace the bed.    It might be defective.

Fill up one or more (plastic) bottles with hot water (like from the hot water tap) and insert them in a couple of socks so that you do not burn yourself on them and put those in your bed. That ought to be sufficient.

As I recall, you don't make the bed.
With the blanket not flat you are keeping the wires bent. Bent wires tend to break easier because they are stressed.
Do you ever sit on it or put stuff on it, with the blankets bunched and tangled? If so you are stressing the wires more.

You might also try having the blanket at a lower setting. A higher setting doesn't heat faster, it just gets hotter.

An electric mattress pad cover might work better for you: turn it on before you get in and it will warm the bed from the bottom up, especially if you can get in the habit of making the bed. The sheets and blankets will be warm. Then when you get in it you can turn it down or off.

They tend to be more expensive but it won't bunch up the way the blanket does.

I have not needed to use mine this winter at all.    A good comforter is ample.

Now there is a cheaper alternative to Angelika's heated mattress pad.  I may have to look into this, as I have toddler and two dogs who un-make the bed for me.

Great idea as I would love to get an electric blanket for the home.  I have one for the truck.

Heat rises, so you can save a little on the electric bill, everything warm and snuggly, and once you are in you can turn it way way way down.

Hello, have you met Ron yet?

I'm not a fan of Sunbeam appliances. I've had 2 bread machines, a waffle iron, a food processor and a deep fryer all crap out on me because the thermostats and/or switches went bad.

And don't ask me why I keep buying them....with the exception of the waffle iron, they all were gifts.

Nope we don't but we spread the blankie out flat, then put the other two blankies I like best on top of it, and I tend to kick the blankies off ,or get them all tangled into one another and in the morning you have to untangle thema ll to put them back on the way you like lol. Sit on it tangled no, but I do, when getting out of bed toss all the blankies off me to the side of me and get out.

I was thinking an electric mattress pad would be nice.
