I just have to say that I find the President's recent comments on the possibility of Jon Huntsman resigning as Ambassador to China and seeking the White House in 2012 to be very cynical, coming from a man who claims such post-partisan ideals. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110201/ap_on_el_ge/us_obama_huntsman

I think he'd be a very good candidate, likely better than any in the crowded GOP field now. However: 1. One obstacle to Romney is that his Mormon faith doesn't play well in the GOP. Huntsman will have the same issue. (The Mormons vote overwhelmingly GOP. I'm surprised they've taken the GOP's anti-Mormon bias so calmly.) 2. He's got solid foreign policy credentials. Unfortunately for him, domestic issues will probably be the focus in 2012. 3. It's a sad state of affairs that having worked with Obama will be a serious albatross for him in the primary. As though being able to work with strange bedfellows is a liability when it's always been how things got done in the USA.

I don't think he is beyond a darkhorse at all. I actually heard him give a speech a few years ago and he is way above average in being able to articulate a message. Old ties through the father to the Nixon Administration and old Republican money. The families rags to riches story will play well. Speaks Mandarin and adopted kids from India and China....whats not to like?

In that case, the big knock against him is that he's going to have to go for the exact demographic that Romney has right now - the moderates who aren't worried about him being a Mormon. In other words, he has to pry those voters from Romney. Like Huckabee has to fight Palin for the same demographic. You know, it's kind of sad that we're discussing 2012 prospects only, as though life must be lived within a single election cycle. If Huntsman can make a big enough name for himself, he could be a viable prospect past 2012.

That would be a long hard road. I am not sure that some of the posters here really understand how much of the Christian Right views the Mormon religion as a cult.

You are right. However, you'd think that with the Texas and Utah roots that he'd have much more to play with than Romney. I am never impressed by republicans but I was him. He speaks of different things than the rest of the party. Looking outward on how we can deal and succeed with the rest of the world. Think the fact he went to the trouble to learn Mandarin and didn't fall back on always English speaks volumes.

The biggest threat to President Obama's re-election in '12 will be his own job performance, followed immediately by things he really has little sway in, but gets the credit/blame for anyway. If his administration screws up badly enough, Palin could be unbeatable. This is the guy who blew me away with his '04 DNC speech, now contemptuously joking about how well he has manipulated the very atmosphere he decried. There are three in the wings for this that I want nothing to do with. Is Huntsman going to be the great moderate candidate, or just another fizzle? If he can shut down a couple of the others along the way, I don't much care.

I can't imagine the Republican party is it is currently constituted allowing either Romney or Huntsman to be nominated. The delegate fights on the local level I would predict is going to be pretty nasty between the tea party and the moderate part of the party. I might be wrong the days of "anointing" someone like George W Bush are over.

Given the outcome of the last election, I'm not going to get hung up on a (blank) being ineligible to win the nomination/Presidency. The first Mormon almost seems like a baby step in comparison. The questions will be; how much energy did the tea party burn off in the midterm ass-kicking they gave the Democrats, and what lessons will they take from the Angle/O'Donnell campaigns that kept the Republicans in the Senate minority?
