The statement "solely" is stupid. Surely weather patterns influence food supply, but in addition to the climate change (nobody knows the extent) there are climate fluctuations (La Nina years for example). Market speculation has big effect on commodity prices. The last may be currently the major factor. So, we may say " US Quantitative Easing" caused the riots. Nobody takes time (me either, not my job) to analyze these things through despite it is not really difficult. Political statements are more important. I saw round table discussion with important bigwig Davos economic forum participants. One (clown) of them claimed the high food prices are because of people are hoarding excessively food and nobody confronted him.

I doubt that anything of significance is has a single cause. Of course, this group is what we journalists call "special pleaders." They view the world through tinted glasses. I'm sure someone is right now blaming Obama, the Trilateral Commission, alien invaders or communist cells for what seems to be the result of a complex confluence of technology, politics, religion and a host of other factors.
