The UAE for one has a birth to death free healthcare system. Many have free education including University, all paid for from oil revenues.

Status: offline 		IIRC, another problem is a very young population with more education, but no jobs for them.  In Egypt, without a job you can't afford to marry and start a family, leading to a lot of social strain.  Combine that with our history of propping up rulers that are on the dictatorial side, I can see why the riots are happening.  Half our aid to Egypt went straight to their military (which came back to US defense contractors.)

No offence to Americans in general, but I don't think that the rest of the world generally sees the relatively opulent American lifestyle to have much to do with working hard, Steven.

I don't see how the entire world could come to live like we do. We are 4% of the world's population and consume 25% of the world's natural resources. The math does not compute.

I think it was Churchchill that said "Democracy is the second worst form of government. The first is anything else". Our rickety system of government is enviable compared to others. I think we should keep our noses out of others' politics and not prop up dictators so we can keep guzzling oil.

Do I think things could become more equitable all the way around? Yes I do. Should they become more equitable? Absolutely.

So lets hear it for the protestors in Egypt and hope they win!

ETA: And the protesting Tunisians, Jordanians and.....


It will certainly be interesting. We can't have it both ways. We can't pick for them or influence their decision and then crow about democracy. If they vote to put terrorists into office then what? That's democracy for you. Or if the decide to go back to something they understand better. Kingdom, a religion dominated government. Or if they convert to a more tribal system like Afghanistan is in reality. How hands of will we be then? How hands off does the world want us to be?

We tend to support dictators because they are very centralized and tend to be more stable.

But if that come true the Egyptian people will rage once more & change for the best
My own personal opinion.


Excellent, it is good to see people here from the regions of the world that bear a bone of contention with the often disdainful vociferous West.

The only way the commoner is going to learn the truth of the world is be communicating with commoners, governments hah, they have other agendas.
