US - $7.25/hr
Australia - $15/hr

Annual Minimum Wage (40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year):
US - $15,080
Australia - $31,200

Income Tax Paid:
US - $1789 ($8,375 at 10%, $6,705 at 15%, rounded down to nearest dollar)
Australia - $3780 (15% for income over $6000)

Annual Net Income:
US - $13,291
Australia - $27,420

Current Exchange Rate as given by Google:
1 Australian dollar = 1.0168 U.S. dollars

Annual Australian Minimum Wage in USD = $27,880 (rounded down to nearest dollar)

So basically, Australian minimum wage is over twice as much as US minimum wage (209%)

And the icing on the cake - those Australian workers get Medicare and 4 weeks of legally mandatory paid leave.

Any Free Marketeers care to justify this?

Status: offline 		There are different economy choices nations can choose. It is not complicated, rather the common sense trivial economics. Australians show that if most people make living wages the whole society is better. The US has chosen so called Plutonomy model. The last involves food stamps, it creates huge prison industry, huge security industry, hedge fund industry (for rich), loan sharks (for poor),  and so on..... So, there are benefits on both sides. The question is only who benefits.

Status: offline 		I hang on an OZ silver board- and beleive me they are not happy.  Housing prices are obsceen there-taxes. and outsourcing is as bad as the US.

It is far from a bed of roses.    BTW--  they asked me to move there.  The folks are very nice- and up to date on the power grab- more American in many ways then America.    Good people there.

Status: offline 		All we have to do is make our minimum wage $20.00 an hour and all of our problems will be solved. One question though. What happens to those that are making $15 to 20.00 an hour now ? I guess they will all get a raise too..

Do not confuse correlation with causality.


For various and sundry reasons, the US has a far higher percentage of dimwits than does any other modern day  so-called "developed economy." The disparity is not left alone to the highest and lowest income groups, but is being aggressively promoted through the education system also, even accepted among aforementioned higher income groups, so as to force all possible into some "co-operatively inclined" group. Who cares about honest problem solving from that. They are encouraged and accede to the dumbing down of their own kids, aside from the few of whatever demographic that see through it.

The countries that thrive are the ones that assess the needs and desires of their citizens and act accordingly. The others take turns going down the sewer drain in succession.

Guess which ones are presented by academia as models? You guessed it.

The idolatry of Rome and Britain never ceases in academia.

Back to the subject ...


If you were the employer, which would you rather hire, hourly wage aside, considering the crap shoot that would be the case in the US, vs. the half-decent chance of a viable employee as might be obtained elsewhere? just off the top  of your head?

Far too simplistic a comparison.

1. Cost of living is higher than in the US overall
2. In the US there are states and municpalities that require more than the Federal minimum wage, compensating somewhat for geographical differences in cost of living.
3. Minimum wage earners in the US pay no income taxes by the time they get done with all of their credits and deductions, and in fact some actually pay negative taxes. Not sure what is actually paid in Au but it needs to be considered, and not just by comparing tax rates.

The apparent goal of our plutocracy is to squeeze the middle class out of existence, and our current tax scheme does exactly that.  Our current scheme benefits the uber rich and the uber poor, and a flat tax would reverse that.  Its the middle 100k-250k households who currently take the hit under the present system.

Status: offline 		Well that is what you believe, but I have seen that in my native Denmark and the result in reality that all our manufacturing industri have either closed down because of cheap imports or outsourcing. Industries like textile, shipbuilding and any labour intensive form of manufacturing is gone here. Latest was WESTAS Wind who after posting the best year profit ever announced the lay of of 600 workers because they are going to move most of their production to China.

Depends on where you live - Sydney is worse than NYC but other places like Perth are more reasonable.

1. True, but so is standard of living.
2. The highest state minimum wage is $8.67/hr in Washington.
3. If US minimum wage earners paid absolutely no income tax at all, they would need to make back $12,800 in credits and deductions to make as much as Australians do after tax.
