PeonForHer -> Stupid Names (2/4/2011 11:10:00 AM)

In the 'Corny Jokes' thread, RapierFugue observed, I think correctly, that a certain joke works better with one name rather than another.

It was this joke:

"A white horse walked into a bar and the barman said, "Hey, we've got a whisky named after you!' The horse said, 'What, Eric?'

"That joke's funnier if the name is "Colin", for some reason", RapierFugue commented, with that sprightly pompousness that all of us at CM have all come to know and love.

What is the silliest name that you've heard? I mean, everyone will probably agree that Maurice Micklewhite had to take the name 'Michael Caine' in order to get anywhere at all in the acting world. George Orwell, similarly, had to lose his birth-name of Eric Blair - and I need hardly mention poor John Wayne's given name at birth.

It may also be of interest to people to know that in the UK, there's something of a tradition to cite the works of a particular thinker in one's academic thesis, not because he/she said something useful, but just because of his/her stupid name. Hence, in one of my dissertations, I cited Ferdinand Pumpian-Mindlin (whose name still has me sniggering) and Barbara Holland-Cunz. (No umlaut. Pronounced the way it's spelt. Jesus, what a cross to bear.)

What's the silliest and most embarrassing name you've come across? No points for mentioning Ed Balls, who has a chance of being a future Prime Minister here in the UK.

Apparently, the Koreans are best for coming up with those sorts of names.

Relatedly, I've spent hours at this site . . . .

My grandfather used to tell me a story about a gentleman he went to college with named Richard Outhouse.... Dick Outhouse... He took his wife's last name when he got married.

A number of years ago I read an article in the local paper about a family with the last name of "Trees".  One son was named Douglas Fir, a second son was named Jack Pine, and the daughter was named Mary Christmas.

Silly. You made that up.

I've never been able to verify this story, but apparently, there's a man in New Zealand whose surname is Itchyarse. He's very proud of his name and can trace it back many generations, so he refuses to change it. His only option is to keep changing his number because he regularly gets people from all over the world phoning up just to ask 'Is Itchyarse really your surname?'

PeonForHer -> RE: Stupid Names (2/5/2011 7:10:35 AM)

The man in charge of gritting the roads in an area in NE England over winter was called a Mr Skidmore.

GreedyTop -> RE: Stupid Names (2/5/2011 7:11:43 AM)

I just got an email.. (totally unrelated to this thread) saying that the street behind Scotland Yard USED to be called Gropecunt.

I think someone is taking the piss....

Wouldn't surprise me if it was once true. Apparently, there were lots of roads with similarly appalling names like that in London at one time. Most of them were renamed during the Victorian era, it seems.

The worst I've seen was a girl called Ima Hogg. She was actually really pretty and not even remotely hog-like.

I also just read about a Chinese pop star sex scandal (lol) where the people involved were named Chen, Chan, Chung, and Cheung. That's just confusing.

mischievousone -> RE: Stupid Names (2/6/2011 8:22:36 PM)

Believe it or not, I've actually met Ima Piggue and Ura Piggue.

Termyn8or -> RE: Stupid Names (2/6/2011 9:44:08 PM)

SweetDommes -> RE: Stupid Names (2/9/2011 9:03:22 AM)

Holly had a cousin named Strawberry Fields. My mom went to school with a Merry Christmas, and taught a girl named Candy Corn.

My high school biology teacher was Richard Sizelove (and yes, he went by Dick). And apparently, there was a mayor in Ft Wayne by the name of Harry Baals.

Edited to add:
On the topic of initials, I went to school with an A.S.S., a B.E.D., an L.S.D., and at least two C.A.T.s

Marc2b -> RE: Stupid Names (2/9/2011 11:15:00 AM)

I just heard about THIS on the radio this morning.

All I can say is: what were this man's parents thinking?
