Gary Moore died on yesterday while on holiday in Spain: http://www.independent.ie/breaking-news/world-news/rock-legend-gary-moore-found-dead-2527823.html ~ not sure if many people on this forum know Moore but he was regarded as one of the best guitarusts around. I put up a good few links to his songs below and also wrote a brief biography.

Moore started his music career in 1969 at the age of sixteen in the original Skid Row with Brush shields but left at the end of 1971. He released his first solo album in 1973. He worked in bands and released solo albums intermittently through the 70's with little commercial success. Moore helped form the Jazz fusion band Colosseum II in 1974 and they released three albums from 1976 to 1977. He contributed guitar and vocals. He also worked occasionally with Thin Lizzy for short periods such as in 1974. He became a long term member in 1978 after leaving Colosseum II and worked on what is regarded as their last great album “Black Rose” (1979), yielding searing guitar on “Waiting for an alibi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLjMmZ8D0E4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFHR_L6u6Qk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOi-DY9rGTk ~ leading to the view that he was probably the best or at least the most accomplished guitarist to work with the band. While working with Phil Lynott and the band at that time he cut his second solo album, which was unsuccessful except for the single Parisienne Walkways, which is probably his most famous track. Lynott contributed the lyrics and vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18FgnFVm5k0 ~ this live version is from 1985 I think.

Moore left Thin Lizzy suddenly in 1979. In 1980 he was set to continue his solo career but started a band called G-Force which released one album. In the 1980's he kept working at his solo career which finally became successful. The material was largely 80's style hard-rock/metal which has dated production-wise but the song writing was impressive on some songs. One decent track is modest hit “Over the Hills and Far Away” from 1986 (not to be confused with a Led Zep song of the same name): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyJEytBlp1I which mixes in some Irish celticisms pretty well.

His 1990 album “Still Got the Blues” marked a return to blues and non-flashy production techniques. It was a big critical success ~ this is the closing track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewTZjjumUo and a live track he performed live at that time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0nKJFVVoYM

He continued with the blues rock format until 1997 with Dark Days in Paradise when he experimented with a modern electronic sound even with dance beats (!), which apparently baffled fans. Like Angels http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnqSl3bajIw is one example. He stuck with this style for another album. He continued releasing studio albums on a fairly regular basis in the 2000's sticking pretty much with the blues rock template. His final studio album was “Bad for You Baby” in 2008.

You are probably thinking of Phil Lynott, leader of Thin Lizzy who died in 1986, or perhaps guitarist extraordinare Rory Gallagher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t_1vgh_X9w who died in 1994. Moore only worked with Phil briefly but on some important things. Interestingly the last hit Phil had was with Moore on a track called "Out in the Fields" back in 1985 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsKpazeA5L8 - its a heavy dose of 80's metalitis, which is cool if thats your bag. BTW the video was shot in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles" - check out the dog at around 2.12 in the vid lol

Oh, ok, I was thinking about *Gary Moore* the anouncer/ game show host in the 60's, 70's.
I've never heard of this one.
Now Rory Gallagher yes!!! *He was fucking AWEsome!* Too bad he drank himself to death.

Gallagher was an extraordinary talent which the likes Clapton and Hendrix spoke highly of. I always thought he was a grade above other highly regarded guitarists like Page etc. since the stuff he did was very complex but not in a showy off way, very subtle and extremely unusual – no one sounded like him and it was as if he took the difficult path around each song. An example is a live version of Moonchild http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyHymAxUVrc – like many of his tracks it’s a sort of journey.

Some hard bitten blues in 1974 from an after hours jam session appropriately enough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wROsv44jjo which really went against the flashy stylistic trends of the day.

This is a clip of Gallagher playing the old Cream song “politician” with Jack Bruce which he plays with remarkable ability after laying down a few standard blues licks to begin with, and pulls a solo that was at least as good as Clapton did back in ‘68 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXk--eL5-kQ even though he had never actually heard the song before, other than Bruce humming the tune!

Yeah he was excellent live. I heard him in 1992. It was a brilliant gig, pretty much the first really memorable one I went to.

BTW here is the studio version of Parisienne Walkways– its hard to find online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHzY4FT9Et0

Like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Gary was one of those players that had technique to burn, yet never let it overshadow "the feel" in his playing. Such a shame.

I've just realised I've seen him live twice; once as Gary Moore, once with BBM (Baker, Bruce, Moore).

As someone else said, a superb technical player, but it was always the feeling he got into his playing that impressed the most. A sad loss.

I was pretty gutted when I heard it yesterday, not that I knew him but interviewed him twice while I worked as a journalist and he was always one of the more "real" people in the music industry (his head was not up his own arse) with plenty of funny stories about his life, career, friends he played with. He had a real passion for music and despite the fact that he was a lot older than me, he really had a thing for modern music as well as blues and was so passionate about it. Such a lovely guy, after the last interview he said "Work is over for us now, shall we grab a bottle of wine, get rid of the minders form the record company and just talk about music? Know any good new bands I should give a listen to or buy the albums?" I was surprised that he wasn't given them for free and he said "I don't believe that I should be given stuff, other musicians need to live too and I don't want to take advantage!" You don't find that attitude often in musicians. Though the bottle turned into 3 or 4 and I think I was still on my first glass while he ordered the next bottle. When I made a comment about his capacity for drinking, he laughed and said "Irish and having toured most of my life, it helps. I don't do hard drugs, they killed Phil, I rather drink and do herbal stuff..."

I recall picking up a Les Paul a bunch of years ago and looking at him and saying "That's quite battered and scratched..." he laughed and said "Don't drop it, she's my baby, Pete and I worked her pretty hard, it's my favorite guitar of all times. She wears her battle scars with pride, like me..." He sold it a year or two later, apparently got sick and couldn't play tour dates and had no insurance. Must have been really tough for him.

Yeah BBM were very good - should have included that with the bio I wrote doh! The one album they did was really good. I think they didn't get on though - I remember a Q interview at the time where Ginger Baker was acting the bollox as usual.

I think Moore left Lizzy when they were about to go on tour in 1979 apparently because he was freaked out by the heroin addictions several members of the band had, particularly Phil. Its a shame he left as Snowy White, despite being an excellent guitarist formerly of P. Floyd, wasn't what they needed at all.

Interesting you did some interviews with Moore - must have been in the later days. For those that don't know Peter Green gave that guitar to Moore around 1970. It was the one of the ones he played while in Fleetwood Mac. In 1995 Moore did an entire album of Green's songs called "Blues for Greeny". He used that guitar throughout. I felt a few of the quieter songs on there were quite spaced out and spooky. Here is a good one from it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJbf4hiyw3g

I have been so wanting to get out and play again. I sat down with my drum pad last night for about a half-hour and practiced. I'tm trying to get a handle on this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLwyzjoB9B8&feature=autoplay&list=PLC4A58841208C35F2&index=6&playnext=7

There's an open mic at a bar down the street Wed. night. Might go after I get my pain med scripts filled.

I have a Strat and a Fender Super-Reverb but I can't play. My hands are too small (good for fisting, bad for Barre chords ) Loved Moore's playing. And Rory Gallagher's. Still remember his "Walk on Hot Coals"

But Jeff Beck is still the best.

Late 90's and early in the next decade, must have been around 2004 or 2006, as I said, absolutely nice and genuine person, quite a few colleagues claimed he's difficult and moody, I never saw that side. He did moan a bit about UK taxes and divorce settlements, wasn't impressed with the behaviour of some younger artists and just a great sense of humor.

I'm usually not one for guitar solos but that one is amazing:
