Also if you have one of the nasties that were created by brilliant but evil minds, once you click the checkmark off in MSCONFIG, and restart, you will find it has turned itself back on again. Some of the more crafty programmers will write it in so msconfig will not come up at all, and then they switch off your registry, which btw, also heads into hkey local settings But you are running xp! Safe mode is still the best path to removal. If one of those msconfig things come back in on startup just find the path and remove it.
