According to many English Language dictionaries in both British English and American Slanglish, A mistress is a female owner of property or the lover of a randy bastard.

How would those who style themselves Mistress view their title and what does the word mean to them within both the alternative and conventional lifestyles?

Well I think pretty much everyone on the scene knows what Mistress means within the context of BDSM so it doesn't bother me at all.
There was also the Mistress of the house, Egyptian Goddesses were called Mistress and Mistress of the robes.
Master can also mean many things.
Ma'am as far as I know is short for Madam and that has more than one meaning.

The term Mistress has been around for a very long time. Below are Webster's defination of Mistress and Dominatrix.
Interestingly Mistress really was not associated with BDSM until Leather culture evolved in the late 50's and early 60's in the USA.

Slaves, while human beings, can also be considered 'property' in BDSM. Title suits me.

before i accepted my Mistress collar i was allowed to address Her as M'Lady. my Mistress does own me and dominates me so She is very suited to the title

I am Mistress of my Household. Those who wear my collar (i.e. are "owned property") are permitted to call me Mistress. The title works just fine for me. So do "Ma'am", "Ms.", and "My Lady". My girl calls me "Your Royal Hawtness" so that's a personal favorite.

The term would have meant the same as being called someones whore amongst my friends. They could have the girl they cared about as a girlfriend and anything extra was a mistress or whore. I thought it funny when I heard it used as a title of respect but to each there own. I think in society when one thinks mistress they think extramarital lover. I am obviously no mistress but I figured I might as well interject my opinion.

In response to that, I'd have to say that your friends would probably think differently of a lot of terms that are used through BDSM. I'm sure when they hear the word "slave" that they aren't thinking of a person who is participating in a M/s dynamic of their own accord. They may think that "Daddy" only gets used in parental situations or that a "puppy" is only the offspring of some form of K-9. There are a lot of words out there that have been adopted by the kink community that have other origins. While I'm sorry that your friends might be ignorant of that fact, I bet they would learn quickly if they chose to educate themselves about alternative lifestyles.
