Could Egypt happen here? Unemployment at an all time high. More 99 weeks expireing. President calling for more workers from overseas. If he wants that why the walls for mexicans? More people losing their houses. The recession is just getting started. The 60's style protest will happen again but on a bigger scale this time. This may be an interesting summer.

mnottertail -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 3:20:24 PM)

well, we would have to have 30 years of emergency measures, republicans would have to be in control and we would need many, many more pyramids.

Dnomyar -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 3:22:13 PM)

If the republicans have their way we will not have any money to build pyramids.

No. First the President would have to lose the loyalty of the military.

No, it isn't. Not even close.

No. The USA has poison gas and is prepared to use it on demonstrators.

Don't think so? Under the pre-1994 formula (when long term discouraged workers were fraudulently taken out of the formula) unemployment has run around 22.5%. It peaked at around 25% in the Great Depression.

But to the OP, no, it couldnt happen here.

ashjor911 -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 4:54:03 PM)

MrRodgers -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 5:12:52 PM)

Well the US doesn't have an autocratic political and brutally street-level, police state. We have a autocratic oligarchic, financial state. Control need only be about your checkbook.

When that dries up, Milton Friedman the odds-defying, capitalist Nobel Laureate, informs that in the great and glourious free-market [sic] capitalist system, your neighbors are to take care of you. What if I don't many or any neighbors ? He didn't say. Didn't say either, if you do have neighbors, what to do if they are equally slave to debt, devaluation and taxes. Did somebody say FEMA.

So no, Americans as I wrote in a another thread, do not have the inspiration or the balls.

Ah, no....for more exports and for ending incentives for companies outsourcing...just the opposite of your claim.

FR

My guess is no.  What went on in Egypt was a demonstration of EDUCATED people having had enough of authoritarian rule.  We do not have enough educated people, that are uncomfortable.  Complacency reigns supreme here in the good old US of A.

Considering the Ultra right wing militias and anti-government extremists in the country, added to that the "Second Amendment Remedies" called for by a certain REPUBLICAN senatorial candidate from Nevada, along with similar statements from a person campaigning for a tea party candidate in Florida, add in the statement from Palin "Dont retreat, reload," and other violent rhetoric from the far right, it could.

But the result will be an oppressive Conservative regime where gays, bisexuals and transgendered people will have no rights, where a woman's right to choose is taken away, and social safety nets like social security and medicare would be eliminated, increasing the number of people in the United States that cannot afford health care and cannot get health care.

MrRodgers -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 6:30:03 PM)

...let alone little things like...food, clothing and shelter.

Willbeur does not document.

That is beneath him.

When the Willbeur speaks you are to accept it as fact.

Yes.  But only after the dollar wont buy anything.  A dollar collapse would do it.   Left or right wont matter -  an empty belly will.

Rule- not poison gas- it will be a bio weapon-- as in a virus.  See Fort Detrict....  and unlike Egypt- we have FEMA camps.   And a continuity of govt plan.

Fellow -> RE: Could Egypt happen here. (2/11/2011 10:00:14 PM)

I think Egypt-type situation is unlikely in the US even if things get really bad. The main reason, I think,  is organizational. The US is not a nation state, it is built on individualistic ideology. US does not have effective parties or other political organizations [Republicrats do not really carry this function, they are mostly for creating illusion of fair elections to public offices].  People try to solve problems for themselves (incl. increasing crime), but not to change the system. There could be plenty of reason to revolt. The government is corrupt, people close to power steal billions. US has now more than 40 million people living in poverty, estimated 3 million homeless. This is a huge number of people. How much we even hear from or about these people?
