Any ideas ?

Focus on your desire. The universe will subsequently present you with a mouse killer.

I hope you feed the cat too in case there was just that one mouse for one day or something! I would put out those no kill traps and see what you get...then you can relocate them...I know some people are not going to like this option though.

I've used the no kill traps, but I think I didn't relocate them far enough, the little buggers came back, and brought friends.

Hey Termy, you could always use the no kill traps and sell the icky buggers to a pet store that sells snakes.

Or get yourself a snake, and feed it the trapped mickey mooses.

Rule -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 5:42:52 AM)

Snakes in the zoo here are fed dead mice to prevent life mice from wounding the snake.

DesFIP -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 7:32:24 AM)

I have to say, that the barn cats I've known prefer to have their dinner come from cans and stop hunting as efficiently if they are fed. But since not feeding them means they may starve, that really isn't an option. We get mice every few months, spread the poison around and are fine for a while. Come spring, assuming it ever comes, we need to wander around the outside of the house with caulk gun closing off any little openings.

kalikshama -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 7:57:55 AM)

I've had cats for decades and IMO, size, gender, and ability to reproduce are irrelevant - it's the personality of the cat that determines how interested it is in hunting.

Feral cats may be better at hunting by necessity, but unless you plan to bring a cat into your house and have it starve unless it catches mice, you're back to whether or not it is disposed to hunt.

I would look for someone with excess outdoor cats and ask for one that's a good hunter.

Aynne88 -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 8:23:33 AM)

I have a teeny little 5 pound half siamese and an 18 pound double pawed huge orange male tabby cat. They are both equally adept at hunting. They are also costly. Vet visits, spaying, neutering, frontline, heartworm, canned food, treats, unexpected injuries, on and on and on.

Please Termy don't just get a cat to kill mice. Get a pet, take care of it, and enjoy the added benefit of the fact that it will kill the mice anyway.

Get a shelter cat.

windchymes -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 8:58:58 AM)

I agree about adopting a cat from a shelter, lord knows there are probably millions of them in the country that need homes.

But trust me, you DO want one that is spayed or neutered. If you don't, you will be in here with a thread complaining about either the male spraying everywhere, and it's almost impossible to get rid of un-neutered male scent, OR, complaining about the female yowling to get out every time she comes into heat, which will be several times a year. And WHEN she gets out, and she will, she'll come home pregnant.

Spay and neuter, PLEASE!!! [:)] It in no way takes away from their desire to hunt.

Aynne88 -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 9:04:32 AM)

Absolutely. It doesn't detract from their killer instinct at all. Brownie (the orange tabby) brings home giant squirrels, chipmunks, birds, he killed a frigging duck last summer. Carnage everywhere. *Sorry....we live near the water and the were cutting through the back part of our yard, and he got one. I wasn't there to save it. They no longer cut through our yard thank god.

Anyway, obviously neutering does nothing to hinder the killing instinct. It also makes them far less likely to wander off, thereby keeping your killer kitty at home making him or her kill your rodent problem, not the neighbor down the street because he smells a female in heat.

Indeed [8|] she actually gets into heat every 3 weeks and it lasts for 6-9 days...at day AND at night. At present summer is in heat again which meant today that I could not open my window to get fresh air in as I know she would get out (whereas when she isn't in heat she isn't tempted to get out that way). Mine will get spayed after another 1-2 litters and then that will be it....I am looking forward to that time for her and for myself. Since i have an unneutered female I know I won't feel sorry anymore in the future when bringing a cat to the vet to get neutered as it truly is much more comfortable for them [:)] and for myself [&:]

Cant say that from my cats. Most of my cats enjoyed hunting despite lots of food at home. A previous cat brought on mice pretty much on a daily basis, with most mornings where I left my flat finding another one or two half eaten mice on the patio....she was addicted to hunting [8|] as well as to have a look if all beds in the 14 appartments next to me are as comfortable as mine....so I was told when I was being informed how she scared the shit out of my neighbours with them waking up finding her asleep on their feet [8|]

Lots of good advice here. And I wanna see a picture of the duckocidal maniac.

Given all this, maybe I should consider some sort of lizard.

I just recalled that there is an island near the South Pole that has feral cats that live on rabbits.

Craigslist, freecyle, the bulletin board at the store or laundromat.
Cats are very easy to get.  Most will kill the mouse.  If possible get one that is fixed.
Our shelter has a sale on dogs-cats- over 5 years old is free. so yours might as well.

Freecycle???

Yeah hello I just want to recycle my cat, it's getting a bit old and tatty...need a new one.

angelikaJ -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 4:32:06 PM)

Termy,

I have a very sociable cat who is an avid mouser.

However, she tends to be more of the sociable on her terms type...they tend to be fairly liberal term, but they are still hers.

Thanks windchymes [:)]. He's a wonderful cat, he keeps the entire property rodent free. He's also kind of a chubster so he makes a great bedwarmer. I do have to remind him now and then that the bunnies are *not* rodents! Now that they are getting huge and territorial everyone seems to have worked out a pecking order!

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 8:34:31 PM)

Not all cats are mousers, don't get one just for that, cause if it's not a mouser or doesn't do a good nuff job you'd be unfair to it to send it back.

Termyn8or -> RE: Where do I find a kitty cat ? (2/13/2011 8:53:54 PM)

I think if I don't buy him any toys he will start mousin' soon enough. I don't really even need him to kill them. Let them live, and let them tell the other moosketeers that there is this big furry dangerous PREDATOR in there, stay away !

That's why I figure, the dangerouser the better.
