Ok.  So I  ran across this ad on collarme for TesFest 06 in NJ.  It's not that far from me and not at all that pricey.  My question is...how "good" (for lack of an appropriate word) are these large commercialized types of events or are they as lame as bubblegum music? Anyone been to one and what did you think?

Lot of people have been to them.  While I haven't attended a TES event, they are the oldest S&M group in the US.  I have attended Janus events, which is in San Francisco and have enjoyed them.

Not all of it will appeal to you but I would be surprised if you didn't find things that will make you count the days till the next one.

Depends on the event.  I'm a convention junkie and I've probably been to over a dozen at this point.

What do you want?  Do you want an educational based event or a play based event or just a vacation based event?  Do you want a workshop or demo?  Do you want to socialize and play more than anything?

DC Leather Fest is this weekend.  Camp Crucible is in a few weeks.  Leather Retreat a few weeks after that.  Bound By Love will be in July.  Dark Odyssey Summer Camp likely in August.  Black Rose is back in December.

Those are all "big events" just in the DC/MD area.

I try to post upcoming events regularly in my blog for people to enjoy.  This is a listing of alt events from March- June: http://emeraldliz.livejournal.com/82955.html

How great an event is depends on who is running it, how well it's organized and how well it meets the needs of the attendees.  Some are truly awesome, and some are more frustrating.  But all provide an energy charged time of connecting with LOTS of other kinky people in a short amount of time and a chance to say "Hey, we're not just loners sitting at the computer all the time."

You have to tell me what "good" is for you.  Some people love cruises... for me they are wallet harvests with the reaper aimed at my back pocket.  Some go on adventure tourism.  I prefer a sand beach an lots of staff bearing food and drinks.

If you want education, TES should be excellent.  They attract some wonderful teachers.  There should be a big dungeon with lots of equipment, but probably there won't be public fucking.  From what I've heard on the vendor grapevine you'll probably be able to buy whatever you want.  Want to meet someone?  That's possible, but far from a sure thing.
