In a small flat in the German town of Erlangen in February 2003, an out-of-work Iraqi sat down with his wife to watch one of the world's most powerful men deliver the speech of his career on live TV.

As US secretary of state, Colin Powell gathered his notes in front of the United Nations security council, the man watching — Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, known to the west's intelligence services as "Curveball" — had more than an inkling of what was to come. He was, after all, Powell's main source, a man his German handlers had feted as a new "Deep throat" — an agent so pivotal that he could bring down a government.

As Curveball watched Powell make the US case to invade Iraq, he was hiding an admission that he has not made until now: that nearly every word he had told his interrogators from Germany's secret service, the BND, was a lie.

Everything he had said about the inner workings of Saddam Hussein's biological weapons programme was a flight of fantasy - one that, he now claims was aimed at ousting the Iraqi dictator. Janabi, a chemical engineering graduate who had worked in the Iraqi industry, says he looked on in shock as Powell's presentation revealed that the Bush administration's hawkish decisionmakers had swallowed the lot. Something else left him even more amazed; until that point he had not met a US official, let alone been interviewed by one.

"I had the chance to fabricate something to topple the regime," he told the Guardian in a series of interviews carried out in his native Arabic and German. "I and my sons are proud of that, and we are proud that we were the reason to give Iraq the margin of democracy."

Yes it is, but it is also amazing that we pour money into our intelligence services that can be misled so easily.

Even more amazing is is how people with years of that executive experience we keep hearing Obama is lacking were manipulated so easily.

But the sad fact is niether was probably true. 

The Bush Administration entered office with the goal of toppling Hussein and were willing and eager to find any any justification.

The fact that the WMD story was bollocks ceased to be an issue a long while back.
Of course, there's plenty of Republicansindependents who are as incapable of admitting that as they are of finding anything the Kenyan's done that the chimp wouldn't have done if his grateful nation had changed the constitution to let him stand again...

If it's all bullshit, presumably you won't have any trouble demonstrating that the Iraqis are glad that you've deposed Hussein and elected a gang of quisling toadies, that all of the reconstruction contracts haven't been handed over to a company that's unwilling to even using decent cement on a deepwater drilling platform because they had bankrolled the chimp and his organ grinder's presidential campaign, and that the Iraqis are cool with all of the death and chaos knocking over their prior government and infesting their country with insurgents has caused, then?

You are correct RML, But Bin laden didnt use the name Al Qaida until he got the idea from the CIA, according to Came4U`s link. The yahoo clip is talking about a BBC documentary series called "Power of nightmares"

Nothing new about Curveball though, I can recall reading posts saying he wasnt telling the truth as long as four years ago on here. I guess the Republicans kept quiet, since they thought it might lose them the 2008 election, ironic huh.

I dont know how you can say that and keep a straight face. Below, an extract from wiki, note the date. Its been established by more than one source that both Bush and Blair were told the wmd intel was unreliable before the invasion

As an independent I have said since the beginning that it was BS, and there was no proven reason we should be there. In fact I challenged many people to look deeper into http://www.newamericancentury.org/ , and discover for themselves some of the reasons for our foreign policies at the time, and even today.

I first read about the "Project for a New American Century" in 1997 I thought they were bat-shit insane then.  When I saw president Cheney and his pet fucking macaque loading up their administration with PNAC people, I knew we were in trouble.   The sad thing is this would have all been avoided had we listened to Harry Truman and NOT overthrown Mohammad Mossedeq in Iran in 1953.  All done in the name of "anti-communism".  Communism the threat of which has been PROVEN to have been over-hyped even in 1953.

We also now know that Saddam and Bin Laden are CIA creations/monsters unleashed and funded by Washington.  Not to mention that it is likely that Bin Laden has been deceased (natural causes) since late 2001 and even if he did make any tapes, they were likely done in an American studio or for all we know...a condo across the street from ground zero.

As far as WMD's are concerned, we also know now that the entire facade of the group of inspectors sent were paid to give false information based on a 'tip'.  Anyone can give a 'tip' to law enforcement, it doesn't always necessarily mean it is true, not to mention where the tip came from --paid (by CIA, or other alphabet groups) informants from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, British and Americans. Who would not trust them? lolol          *puts her hand up.

You deny that hundreds of thousands have died in the two wars? You deny that millions of lives were ruined? You deny that the wealth of several nations (primarily that of the US) was plundered?
