I am fairly new to being a Master, but our punishment dynamic was set up in part because my slave craved it. I am somewhat of a softie, though in general sexual ways I enjoy inflicting pleasure/pain. So the idea of punishment for the sake of her refusing or confusing an order didn't really appeal to me. But since she desires the structure, I have found ways to use the punishments to get things that I enjoy or that secretly, she does too. In a lot of ways, I have noticed that the rules and punishments that I have set up, even though there are very few, have brought us closer and taught us more about each other. I think it depends on how people want to establish their relationships and the level of dominance. Sometimes, I get that she wants to be punished for some reason or another, so on those instances, the punishment is usually softer than accidental disobedience. It tells her that I see through her ploys for the attention that she craves. But since I started regular canings alternated with ignoring her, she rarely disobeys anymore because she isn't sure which she will receive. But if she truly makes me angry, I just walk away and cool down. I don't give her a chance to provoke a violent response in me where I am not in control anymore.
