Name the country that ...

... has had several spies caught spying on the United States and her allies for them.

... has illegally acquired weapons of mass destruction.

... has violated over fifty UN resolutions and proclamations.

... has violated the international rules of war.

... has violated the international laws on torture.

... has violated international standards of criminal prosecution and due process.

... has illegally used military force on civilian populations.

---

Anyone know what country that is? Anyone know why the United States has not attacked or condemned them?

Is it because they have nukes?

[;)]

Sorry, ArtCatDom, I couldn't resist a joke answer...

:-D No apologies needed.

Making a somewhat serious reply, that hasn't stopped us from taking a hardline stance on North Korea or others, has it?

Besides ... I'm sure their WMDs are all targeted/deployed/prepared against certain other nations ... ;o)

Having been raised a chunk of my childhood in the west of Scotland and by a particularly rural Scottish mum, I'd have to agree that haggis is a weapon of mass destruction. It's like fruitcake. It's traditional to give it as a gift, horrifying to thought of as actually eaten. ;)

Not quite ... but it is someone we're intimately associated with ...

I must admit though, that the description I gave would be accurate (including illegal development and proliferation of WMDs) for the United States except that the country in quesiton spied on the United States and allies.

Israel.

I have a friend whose parents are Christian Palastinians and come from Haifa and where marched out of their house at gun point in 1947 (I think) and told their house was not theirs anymore. They emigrated to Canada, when my friend's father was dying of cancer he went back to Israel and knocked on the door of his old house and asked for it back. The occupants were apparently somewhat embarrassed but still called the police who arrested him and beat him up somewhat.

There is a monument in Haifa claiming to celebrate its liberation from the Palastinians. No Israelis lived there before the war so its funny how they could have liberated it. Still, it sounds better than saying they stole it.

caitlyn -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 8:33:46 AM)

Well, meatcleaver obviously got the answer, but lets take this a step further.

The United Stated is the world's current superpower ... a country would be very foolish not to spy on the United States.

What is the legal way of acquiring a weapon of mass destruction? Is there a permit with a 30 day waiting period, or what?

Is there is legal way to use military force on civilians?

I understand the point you are making, and can't say that I disagree when you question the almost blind support of Israel by the United States ... but at the same time, that tends to be the nature of a military alliance, or one based on a powerful political lobby back at home. It just is, what it is.

mnottertail -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 8:46:22 AM)

I had a brother-in-law that is a government cryptographer.  He has been in Israel several times, he said the nice thing about them was when he was staying at the hotel, they had little green lights above their doors, that were turned on when the fellas were spying on them.

LOL,
Ron

When you take the whole scenario a stage further. Israel with nuclear weapons, the US military in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and India with nuclear weapons. Suddenly Iran's desire for nuclear weapons doesn't seem crazy at all but rather rational. It is Bush that is irrational and dangerous.

ArtCatDom -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 10:03:12 AM)

A friend who came to visit guessed China. He would be correct they fit the criteria I laid out.

Israel as a couple pointed out is also a correct answer.

There are other Middle Eastern nations who fit the criteria (including another country was helped by the United States in this list of violations).

However, he also guessed Switzerzland. I'm more worried about the growing threat of Benelux myself.

Moloch -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 10:20:14 AM)

Hey leave Switzerzland alone, they are the last remaining country in europe that didnt turn into a bunch of politically correct pussies, plus their immigration laws rock.

Multiple countries could be the "right" answer. Just depends on who fits the definition.

As for WMDs, they can be developed in ways that do not violate treaties ratified by the developing country or partner countries. The primary nuclear treaty has an explicit mechanism for legally backing out. North Korea exploited it for example.

There are plenty of lawful means of using military force on civilians. MPs involved in a peacekeeping force have every right and responsibility to exercise police powers to establish order, for example.

Our blind support of Israel is disheartening. Our coddling of China just as much so.

I do understand the political reality of it. Beyond even an alliance, Israel is a political third-rail in a lot of ways. Being anything vaguely antizionist leads shortly to accusations of antisemitic bias. Being even semi-successfully cast the racist is political death for all but the most well-connected and influential.

The heavy influence of the downstate New York's political weight pushes for a pro-Israel position. The Rockefeller days are long gone, but it's still quite the political force to be reckoned with. Evangelical Christians are also a heavy weight on a pro-Israel position. Until someone offers reasonable alternatives for allies in the region, these influences are unlikely to be overcome these influences.

Just as much, we're unlikely to stop treating Saudi Arabia with such friendly bias until we can find reasonable alternatives for regional allies and oil.

I understand the situation, I just do not like it and would rather we build alternatives.

Vendaval -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 12:10:09 PM)

I guessed Israel and China, and possibly Saudi Arabia.  And yes, the political realities
are understandable, but not something easy to accept.

Do you have any alternatives to suggest?  Ones that don't involve Luxemburg cheese
or cauldrons full of haggis?

IronBear -> RE: Name that country (5/4/2006 2:12:40 PM)

Sure do.. We are arming the Aussie Defence Forces with high powered slains to fire off hard baked scons made by a battalion of hard faced grannies who think the poles need renaming so the US becomes "The Land Down Under". I tell you that we dont have enough dentists to deal with shattered teeth and those bloody scone will take a missile out in min air and can be air dropped over high population areas as freebies to deciumate the population.......

And are the centers filled with Vegimite?

But we do spy on ourselves and our allies.

YoursToTake -> RE: Name that country (5/5/2006 1:54:11 PM)

North Korea and the Bush Administration doesn't really care about them because they don't have any oil to take control of to get and keep prices up.
