WhiteRae -> Hi :) (2/17/2011 8:02:15 PM)

Hey. I'm new here. Not looking for anything really, just curious and want to learn more. If you love physics/astronomy/math send me a message. :)

Welcome to the CM boards! You won't find a hadron collider or an oort cloud here, but we're fun anyways. [;)]

Docere -> RE: Hi :) (2/17/2011 8:31:46 PM)

Here is a little trick.  If you go to an area, sort by replies and you will see all of the popular topics come to the top.

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Just the fact that you know what an oort cloud is is impressive. lol

I had a real fascination with astronomy and its related phenomena for some time, then I got into complex systems and nonlinear dynamics as they relate to human behavior and moved into economics and there I stayed. (Okay, that's not quite true, modeling such systems ended up moving me into computers and IT and there I've stayed.)

Interesting. I don't think anything will get me away from physics though. I decided to get a PhD in particle physics in seventh grade and while it may not be in particle physics, I will get a PhD in physics/astrophysics one day.

I've encountered two kinds of people at the extreme intense end of the science spectrum - those who lock onto something have it as a serious focus (One girl I know decided she wanted to become an astrophysicist at around 17 and spent then next ten years working towards it. She's now a PhD working at JPL. Another knew by 18 that she wanted to be on the cutting edge of genetic engineering and she's now 27 and has just about completed her PhD working on the genetic component of schizophrenia and how to remove it.) and those who have a more holistic view and find everything fascinating. I'm in the latter category - I could easily see myself taking an entirely different career path and doing something completely different. I still regret not doing more work with electromagnetism. I've got about half a tesla coil laying on the end tables in my living room - I should really complete it - maybe this summer once work calms down.

There once was a woman named Bright
Whose speed was much faster than light.
She set out one day
In the usual way
And returned the previous night.

Welcome to collarme!

We don't have many astronomers here, but there are a lot of heavenly bodies....

Being a physics nerd I am required to say this: YAY TACHYONS!

Welcome to CM and the boards.  To avoid going a little nutty, I'd advise staying away from Politics and Religion, not that there's anything wrong with that. [;)]
