I have at least 20 lbs (every 3 months) of stored, frozen leftovers (not more than 2 days old) of chicken/duck (bones, some meat left on, skin, cartilage), cooked vegetables (assorted, also frozen) that I put in my larger deep-freeze as gradual add-ins instead of throwing them out.  This is because for one I hate waste and secondly even in winter the critters (racoons, skunks) would get into my garbage outside.

I don't currently have a dog (have one cat left that dislikes people food in general) but I have considered making baked (large chunk size) homemade bones for a neighbor's 2 large dogs.

I have seen a few shows where they have made them but I wasn't really paying attention at the time.

I have the necessary meat grinders, food processor, bran, whole wheat, flour, oats, etc.

Before I take the bones out of the freezer, should I plan to use the bones by boiling to oblivion then grinding (for the marrow nutrition)??  or do I cook it as I would for soup and toss the bones (uhhg wasteeeee).

Does anyone have ideas/recipes or have attempted this feat? I'd appreciate baking instructions in detail as well as info if adding of a preservative is necessary????

thanks in advance,

*PS!  I have seen many cat threads here, haven't noticed too many comments about dogs? Gotta be some here!!??

**also, for decorative purposes, do they sell dog bone shape cookie cutters? or will I have to roll this out as a dough and cut it ad-lib?

You could always send me the bones, if they're raw. My guys would LOVE them. It helps them keep their teeth nice and white and clean.

a lot of petcare sites have recipes for homemade doggie treats. i've seen doggie cookbooks in Barnes&Noble and Borders.
try googling; you'll find some recipes and tips that way. i've never made homemade dog snacks, but i've thought about it. =p haha

Ooo I would catchy, if I could.  I do have the rare ham bone or ribs, but more than often spindly chicken.

Lilly.  Doggie cookbooks? lol wow, people must be really into this. I will try to google, but mostly come up with people wanting scrap meat to make their own also.

I also wonder if I can mix lunchmeat inside it too, since I freeze lots of that since my son won't eat anything over 2 days old, if that.
