Just spoke to a breastfeeding educator. She says that men can NOT breastfeed. With hormones they might increase their breast tissue mass, but males do not have the ductwork to allow lactation. BTW the "pimply things" are called sebaceous glands.

?! They must be modified glands then. Sebaceous glands are oil glands, or so I learned in Anatomy & Physiology class. I'll look it up really quickly here...

"gland in the skin of mammals that secretes an oily substance called sebum. In humans, sebaceous glands are primarily found in association with hair follicles but also occur in hairless areas of the skin, except for the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. Sebum is a mixture of fat and the debris of dead fat-producing cells. These cells are constantly replaced by new growth at the base of the glands. Generally the sebum is deposited on the hairs inside the follicles and is brought up to the surface of the skin along the hair shaft. In hairless areas, the sebum surfaces through ducts. Sebum lubricates and protects the hair and skin and prevents drying and irritation of membranes."

Okay, that does make sense if the ones on the areola are used for lubrication. Defense against too much moisture and sucking, I guess. Nature is a fascinating thing, even when the object being studied is the human body.

Well ... we seem to have found a favorite topic! I could spend an entire day in the hospital & not find another health care professional who knew what Montgomery's Tubercles are!

And, it's surprising to see that so many know about relactation ... or inducing lactation in males. (Though it's usually just a side effect of Thorazine & other drugs)

Nothing I need to educate you folks about on this topic :-)

About 700 males get breast cancer every year in this country. 300 of them die because either they weren't taken seriously when they first went to the doctor or they delayed in seeking help. When males don't seek help because of a 'breast' complaint, it's usually because they are embarrassed cause men don't have 'breasts'. Sometimes certain medications can make the male breast swollen or sensitive. Males whose mothers took certain drugs during pregnancy such as DES, have a family history of breast cancer, family history of uterine/ovarian/testicular cancer should tell their doctor.

ok I dont know who you talked to but they need a bit of reality... Men CAN and HAVE breastfed...

Male lactation
The phenomenon of male lactation in humans has become more common in recent years due to the use of medications that stimulate a human male's mammary glands. Though human males have nipples, it is not so often understood that they also have mammary glands. Ordinarily the mammary tissue is low in volume and cannot be noticed. Under the appropriate hormonal stimulus -- the hormonal stimulus that nature provides to human females when they become pregnant and give birth -- the mammary glands of human males can also produce milk. The volume of milk produced will be small relative to the amount that a female can produce.
The most common circumstance under which lactation is induced is when hormonal treatments are given to men suffering from prostate cancer. Female hormones are used to retard the production of cancerous prostate tissue, but the same hormones also stimulate the mammary glands. Male-to-female transsexuals may also produce milk due to the hormones they take to reshape their bodies. Extreme stress has also been known to be a cause of male lactation, as evidenced by American POWs returning from the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where physical activities were demanding and food were in short supply.
It is also possible for males (and females) to induce lactation through constant massage and simulated 'sucking' of the nipple over a long period of time (months).
The phenomenon of male lactation occurs in some non-human species, and the lactating males may assist in the nursing of their infants. One species of fruit bat (Dyacopterus spadiceus) is notable for this reason. According to several sources, lactation and even nursing have occasionally been observed in humans. See External links.
