Menu ideas needed for Mistress Event

hello all
I've got a ClubFEM event coming up in a week.
They ask that the boys bring a dish to the event, and we serve it to the Dommes present while they have their social hour.

So I'm looking for some menu ideas--nothing too complicated, if possible.

here's what I observed from last time:
  • should be light-fare--noticed that most dined light
  • finger food okay but not messy
  • easy to serve from a platter or bowl
  • not too heavy (paper plates!)
Last time I made a very nice garden salad--I'll probably do that again.  I was looking in the h'ors d'oeuvres section today for other ideas...
what do you think:
cheese puff?  mini knishes?  swedish meatballs? pigs in blankets?

There's no cultural theme, course suggestions or allergy restrictions?

Random idea:
Dolmas, they can be eaten with fingers or fork, can be served hot or cold and can be stuffed with a variety of low calorie veggies, grains or meat.  Plus, they're just interesting enough to stand out, without being too far out as to be uncomfortable to try for the uninitiated.

Hmmm. Never thought of those. Are they hard to make? Can you buy them pre-made?  I've never been one for grape leaves but I know lots of folks who absolutely love these.

Shrimp puffs?

Ingredients
Oil spray
1 large can refrigerator biscuits
2 cups Monterey jack cheese, shredded
2 green onions, chopped
1 cup mayonnaise
1 pound small shrimp, cooked
1 teaspoon fresh dill, chopped

Directions
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray miniature muffin tin with oil spray. Split each biscuit in half and place in muffin tin, pressing into the bottom.

Mix next 5 ingredients together in medium bowl and place 1 tablespoon of shrimp mixture in biscuit dough. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and bubbling.

Pear Walnut Wontons?

Ingredients
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean, scraped
1 tablespoon orange liqueur
6 ounces dried pears, roughly chopped
1.25 ounces walnuts, toasted and finely chopped
25 to 30 wonton wrappers
Bowl of water, for sealing wontons
1/2 gallon vegetable or peanut oil, for frying

Directions
In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring water and sugar to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and stir in vanilla bean scrapings and orange liqueur.

Place pears in the bowl of a food processor and process until finely chopped, stopping to scrape down the bowl if necessary. Add the sugar syrup and pulse just until combined. Transfer the pears to a bowl and stir in the walnuts. Place the mixture in the refrigerator to cool completely, approximately 1 hour. The filling may be made up to 1 day ahead of time.

Heat oil in a 6-quart Dutch oven to 360 degrees F.

To form the dumplings, remove 1 wonton wrapper from the package, covering the others with a damp cloth. Brush the edges of the wrapper lightly with water. Place 1 teaspoon of the pear mixture in the center of the wrapper. Fold over the edges, seal, and shape as desired. Set on a sheet pan and cover with a damp cloth. Repeat procedure until all of the filling is gone.

Gently place the wontons in the oil, 7 to 8 at a time. Fry until golden, approximately 2 minutes. Remove to a cooling rack set in a sheet pan lined with newspaper and let cool at least 5 minutes before serving.

They're not too hard to make as i recall (it's been a while), no harder to make then tamales (also a good idea--possibly better, the ingredients are easier to find, if you can transport hot or heat up there) from what i recall.  Yes, you can find them pre-made in a gourmet section or "ethnic" section of some markets.  These tend to be high-ish in salt content and fairly caloric though.

Oh my god. both sound delicious.  The wontons are way outside of my capabilities....but I think I'll try making the shrimp--of course, I'll have to make a batch for me FIRST..... to ensure that they are palatable....

Ok. good to know.  Most of the Dommes are in their 40's, 50's  etc. so I suppose I should consider the "health factor."

I like bringing fruit kabobs to many social gatherings. It usually goes
over well with all ages. Simpy buy a package of wooden skewers and
cut up some fresh fruit. Grapes, strawberries, canteloupe, pineapple, etc.
You can even buy the fruit already cut!

Fruit kabobs!
brilliant.
Appeals to my sense of aesthetics, too.

I think there's one boy who always brings fruit....so I may have to save this one for one of my Sunday boy brunches.

(okay...technically...we call them "Lumberjack Breakfasts"....think lots of meat n' biscuits...if I call it a boy brunch, only my gay friends show up...)

Waffles? (just kidding)

Veggie trays are always nice.

Anything chocolate is normally well recieved at an all-female gathering too.

Well, the reviews were good. And seafood always screams, "CLASS ACT!"

It is unfortunate that the ladies have not been asked to name things that they would like to see or even preferences.

Stuffed mushrooms are remarkably good for those sort of gatherings... they're very very easy and you can even make a variety of fillings and still cook them all together. They're definitely light eats.

And you can make vegetarian, vegan, and omnivore options all at once!

I really do wish they would vocalize their preferences, too.  AND I'd love for the boys to get their act together, and agree ahead of time who is bringing what. 

*sigh*  I'm not head boy. Not in charge.

We had the most bizarre assortment of food last time---tons of veggie trays, a cheese and pepperoni tray, two garden salads.  Bragging here--mine was devoured--it was very pretty.  Someone brought a couple of rotisserie chickens so they cut those up, and served it with white rice (mostly untouched), three people brought some form of corn bread or foccaccia with jalapenos.... we had AMPLE desserts....and various chips and dips. A tray of deviled eggs (those went quickly)

Very few hot foods, so I definitely like the idea of bringing something hot. We have a microwave there and a kitchen (no over) and someone last time brought a can of sterno and caterer tray for the chicken, rice etc.

I'll probably bring another salad--this time, field greens, raspberries, blue cheese crumbles and skinned cucumbers with rasp. vinagrette dressing.
Liking the shrimp puff idea.....no one specified allergies....mushrooms are a bit intimidating.  I've never cooked a mushroom before.

I dunno--I've had my fair share of culinary disasters...
I may take you up on that offer sometime--I come up to NYC on occasion! (I'll be up in NYC end of April for a concert/Times Square)

Okay, you are not the one in charge. Then just do it anyways. Be proactive. You know who these people are, get a list of email addy's and send out messages about what everyone is bringing to the next gathering. What is the worst that can happen? No response? Folks won't do it? You won't know until you try.

Good question--but in all truth actually...it is against the rules.  The guest list is kept entirely confidential, so I don't know from one party to the next who is coming, and I don't have access to their email.  Only the Head Mistress knows who will be in attendance.  I did ask last time if they knew what the others were bringing, and I was told "just bring anything...we always have lots of food".   

edited to add:  I don't know the other boys other than one regular who I email with a lot.  At the last party, there were a lot of first-timers--not all will be invited back--and I suppose some will be scared off and won't want to come back.

I can think of several suggestions for dealing with that, but if folks are happy with the way things are working then it might be useless.

Let me know how it turns out. If you lived closer to me, I would be more than happy to fix you up some things to take along.

Thanks--recipes are always appreciated! :-)

We'll see how it goes next Saturday.  I suggested maybe a google group poll or a sign-up sheet that the Head Mistress would keep, and we could sign up with her...or see if the Head boy is willing to do it.  (He manages the kitchen prep)
