Ok, so last week I was sick - laryngitis and a cold and generally feeling miserable. I go to the doctor's office. I am told by the receptionist that they have installed their new electronic medical records program and they need to take my picture. I told them no, I didn't want my picture taken.

Now, aside from feeling miserable and not wanting a picture recorded of just how badly I looked, I just don't like the concept. I'm aware that electronic records are a fact of life, and I have a picture on a drivers' license and my work ID, but I believe your doctor's office is different. In the name of protecting our privacy, it really is doing just the opposite.

Anyone else ever get an uneasy feeling about this sort of thing?

I'll have to make a couple of calls on this--you've piqued my interest. Many of our clinics and hospitals are using all electronic records, and many have stopped using SSN's as primary patient identifiers so that the SSN doesn't get put on the patient's paperwork/billing.

I'm speculating here--I wonder if the photo is not only for patient identification (in the event of a tragedy) but also to prevent fraud (a more likely explanation)

My doctors office has also recently started managing the patient records electronically.
While I think it's a fantastic idea to do so, it seems so much less personal than before,
and more time consuming too, as some doctors are still in the hunt and peck stage.
I have not been asked to have a photo taken though, and I feel that would creep me out a bit.

Take all the blood you need...just don't take my photo!

I really wonder if it's to prevent fraud--a person can't come into the office under your name to access healthcare. Quite common-- friends and roommates who don't have health insurance will sometimes ask a friend/roomie if they can use their insurance card to go to a doctor, ED, etc.

My doctor's office, for example, makes a photocopy of my insurance card AND my driver's license, so in all honesty, it's really no different from them taking my photo electronically. I've asked them about why they need my license--and it was for exactly that--to prove the person presenting the insurance card is the person on the card.

my dr's office requires a photo id each and everytime I go in and they made a copy of it for their records for the sole purpose of preventing fraud. I don't have a problem with this since I'm asked for my id almost everywhere I go where I use my credit card. I don't see it as any different.

My gyno requests insurance card and photo id at every visit. I have been going there for years. It is for the prevention of insurance fraud. It does not bother me. I have the best gyno ever.

I think you are being paranoid but it is your right to refuse…I could think of a few uses for pictures.

It could give a more personal feel to your visit…the doctor or receptionist will have your file out before your appointment and will recognize you without having to ask for your name.

It is always a fear and danger to mix records and prescriptions… a picture would help keep the confusion down.

A doctor once told me as they were taking my picture once a year so he could get a reference of my health over time...a large change over a years time could indicate a hidden illness.

I believe your privacy is assured and your records and pictures are not given out without your authorization.

Just me but I couldn’t care less how I look to my physician… I just want to be assured of my health or feel better.

Up here we have our pictures on our health insurance cards, so there's no real need for the doctors to take a picture, but in all honesty it wouldn't really bother me if they took one. I mean, its not like the authorities don't already have plenty of pictures of me, what with citizenship card, driver's license, health card, mug shots....they pretty much know what I look like if they ever decided they needed to have a chat with me.

Yes, only because usually people must pay to take my picture.

Would this be a G-rated photo ID, or a photo of a more personal nature?

Given the fact that our photos are taken constantly, every day we are out and about, with surveillance cameras........no, it doesn't bother me.

It just feels intrusive to me too.

On a related note:

For a long time I have resisted buying an I-Pass (automated toll ID for your car). It just felt way too big brother for me. What to prevent the state from issuing speeding tickets to cars that took less time than needed to get from one drive-thru portal to another?
I realized the same thing could be done with my phone, so when I get a chance I'll buy an I-Pass and save myself 50% from the cash price.

Actually, they can do just that. My daughter got a letter saying they would revoke her E Z Pass if she didn't stop speeding through the toll plazas. Normally in NY you're supposed to go through at 5 mph. I applauded it as slowing her down has been something we've been working on since she got her license.

New health cards were issued in Ontario some years ago. It now has you picture on it. If you still have your old one (red and white with just the #) you don't have to replace it unless it's damaged or lost. I've had mine since my late teens, and it's still in very good shape.

I've never had my doctor's office request a picture or the ER ( common visitor

) or even the local clinic in town. If they wanted to do so, I'd have no problem if they explained to me that it was to prevent fraud. But then they can always take a photocopy of my d/l.

I'm not worried about "big brother", never have been. I figure if it's for my protection and to prevent fraud, then I'm all for it. I worked many years for 2 credit card companies and know the amount of theft that went on without the actual client even knowing their card was missing. I was lucky in that I could 'sniff" out the frauds and the thieves. I won't leave my purse anywhere, regardless of where we are. If I'm at someone's home then I hide it where I know it won't be found. Paranoid? Maybe, but I've also heard of too many women who've had their purses stolen from churches.

Intrusive ? They put you in a CAT scanner and shit, they are taking pictures with Xray vision in a way. They take a picture of your insides, why not the outside. How bashful can you be ?
