PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The school district plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms.

In a letter sent out to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that on Thursday the Providence School Board will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.

In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, "We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district," Brady wrote. "Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff."

Union president Steve Smith said his union has already met with legal counsel and will fight this effort. He also said the move caught him completely off guard and that it will undermine the groundbreaking collaboration between teachers and management.

Why dont they just give those pink slips to the state employees? Its not the teachers fault the budget is fucked up.

Grandstanding to layoff all the enlisted men while the officers are retained. That's like a manufacturing company laying off all its production personnel while retaining all the management.

The solution to this is to pull Brady into a meeting and ask him what the hell he was thinking. (He was thinking that he can stampede the populace into reinstated funding but he'd never admit it.) Make him look like a complete moron for retaining management while letting go the teachers, then see if he's willing to get the job done with less or he needs to go. Make sure that his own raise gets frozen for this stunt.

Disgusting, but unfortunately not surprised. To blame teachers and not management is always the cry, insert any front line job in the place of teachers.

The teachers are responsible for their management.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Teachers getting pink slips (2/24/2011 11:05:09 AM)

Great idea

Now they'll have the bottom the barrel teaching the kids.   Who else wants to work where this is the best solution they can find?

So only the teachers votes counted when the school boards got voted in? Only the teachers choose the school administrators?

The teachers elect their union heads who in turn use union dues to massively outspend opposition candidates.

Moonhead -> RE: Teachers getting pink slips (2/24/2011 1:09:21 PM)

Maybe they can outsource the teaching jobs: have the kids phone some call centre in India for six hours a day, and stick the school boards with paying for the phone bill and the fiver a day Graduates in Mumbai get paid...

FR

I favor the abolishion of primary schools. The kids can't defend themselves, there are predators and transportation problems. This can all be done online. Of course they do have to go out in public as well, somewhere, but schools are noplace I would ever want to send a kid.

I didn't bring in all this bullshit government and union into the schools, and I'm glad as hell that it's not my job to get rid of it because I have no kids. By choice. Thirty years ago I said and held the opinion that this world is not place for kids. What the fuck do you think I think now. This planet is not fit for human habitation.

First, because it is the school district that is facing the budget deficit.  The city is not in a position to fire State employees.

Here's another article on the issue:

Providence Officials Give Precautionary Termination Notices To ALL the City's Teachers
. . . Since the law requires that teachers are informed by March 1 if they are going to be laid off, officials informed them all — just in case.

. . . Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff.
Providence isn't the only school district in Rhode Island that is taking this kind of measure.

It also sounds like this isn't very unusual.

You obviously have no idea how union dues are used or what they are for. Just shut the fuck up for once in your life.

I favor the abolition of any school that promoted you beyond third grade.

This can all be done online.

First, you'll need computer access for all students and universal Internet access.

I know exactly how they are used. I consult to 5 unions, idiot.

In Rhode Island (and Providence plantation) wearing plaid, poka dots and stripes all at the same time is a fashion statement.

Then management negotiated. It is easy to blame one side.

Marini -> RE: Teachers getting pink slips (2/24/2011 9:16:17 PM)

Tazzy, our school system furloughed everyone 4 days this year.
It saved many jobs.

They are set to cut around 1000 jobs next year, hopefully many through early retirement/attrition.
I am sure we will have to take furloughs again for probably several years, but many of us, will gladly take the furlough/pay cut and save jobs!!!

tazzygirl -> RE: Teachers getting pink slips (2/24/2011 9:37:36 PM)

I have no doubt this is a measure they had to take. And Im equally sure that all these teachers wont be on the chopping block for long.

And, I am a firm advocate of homeschooling, as hinted too ~ahem~ in T's post. But I had the same thought... pc's and internet access... though... not having schools open, no buses, little administrative costs, ect... would certainly save money for that endeavor.

~ETA

One of the huge issues with T's proposal would be... who would be at home with the kids while they are taking their on line educational courses?
