On the other board- we are discussing food storage and expiration.

Namely canned goods that are expired-- and how hungry would you have to be to take the chance.   Have you ever had food poisoning?   I have and it was my worse days--  very bad. I NEVER want that again.

I have had it, but not from expired canned goods. It was from a Tunisian restaurant I went to in Los Angeles several years ago.

The problem with expired canned goods is more likely to be botulism than food poisoning. Much, much worse.

Got it from a restaurant in town.  I made sure the place got my bill.  I will NEVER eat at that place again.

Commercially canned foods are generally safe to eat provided the cans are not rusty, severely dented or bulging.

I had it when I was about 3 months pregnant and before there was all the stuff in the news about not eating seafood and mercury and all that. Husband took me out to a well known nice by the ocean restaurant. I ordered scallops and landed in the hospital for 3 days. To this day I still can't eat scallops without being violently ill.

It's not so much the condition of the food which gives food poisoning but the hygiene of it and how it is cooked or prepared. When I was street homeless I've eaten rotting meat I've found in dustbins without suffering any ill effects because I found a way of washing it thoroughly first. My instances of food poisoning have all come from either take aways or eating out.

I'm pretty sure I had it once in 2002 I think it was...it was the worse I have ever felt in my life...I had traveled to Michigan and think I got it in a Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor....

As far as canned goods turning into bulging cans..this has only happened to me once.....last year I discovered a rather severely bulging can of guavas I bought years ago and forgot about...I was afraid it was going to explode on me. I treated it as almost like a bomb getting rid of it and I carefully got the can into a bag and threw it out...Whew! That would have been a bad sight if it had exploded!

I landed in the hospital emerg years ago from really bad egg rolls at a chinese restaurant across the mall from where I worked.  I was staying with my best friend while my b/f and her hubby were moving furniture out of town.  Since she couldn't leave her baby alone, and I wouldn't let her wake the darlin' up, had to drive myself.

I had no d/l at the time, ended up with a 2 yr old in another curtained area screaming bloody murder from an impacted tooth and a runaway from the nuthouse next to the hospital who kept screaming "shut that fukken kid up, I can't sleep.  Trip of a lifetime that's for sure.  Needless to say, I didn't get any rest that night, through the projectile vomiting, the kid and the nut.  I won't even eat egg rolls where I live now.  Only when I go to see my dad in Ottawa.  Totally different filling that I trust there.  Here, o not so much.

Had it bad as a kid once, from a hot dog.  My poor parents - 5 kids and a dog (I didn't like the way it tasted so I gave half of it to the dog) all vomiting and screaming from stomach pain.  It was a memorable night, lol.

Most likely, most people have, they just usually think of it as the 24 hour flu or a stomach bug.

As far as eating out goes, the most dangerous thing is going to be the lemon slice in your drink. Seriously. The servers tend to forget that they are a food item and do not treat it accordingly.

Lemons tend to come into a restaurant pretty grubby.

They usually aren't washed. They just slice em and put the slice and whatever was on it into your drink. YUMMMMMMMMM

According to this study.

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/lemon.asp

Over 2/3 of the lemons they sampled had significant amounts of bacteria on them. Many were pathogenic.

From ice cream at a restaurant! A friend and I projectile-vomitted over a bridge, since of course being girls we shared dessert.
'Twas then I discovered some ice cream is made without pasteurising or preservatives.
Natural isn't nicer!

"An extensive search of the literature yeilded no reported outbreaks or illnesses attributed to lemon slices in beverages."

Per your source. Also note, it states 21 restaurants with 76 samples from all those restaurants.

From the results of the study itself...

A total of 76 lemons from 21 restaurants were sampled during 43 visits.

What it doesnt say is how many restaurants were found to have "contaminated" lemons. And which ones didnt.

What it does say is that the source of contamination could not be definitely determined. My question to the scientist who did the study would be... did you test the lemons in homes as well?
