You would think that after ten hours of listening to people complain about why they can’t pay their bills would be enough work for one day, but rifling through avocados at the grocery store, Marie could only sigh. Collecting the ingredients for a salad on a Thursday night shouldn’t be an unpleasant chore, but it had been a very long day and she was tired. Knowing that not having lunch ready the night before for the following day would only make her have to get up earlier, she trudged along the aisles searching for what she needed. The homely man at the checkout counter gave her the same smile he always gave her, chin down, eyes a little hooded. It wasn’t a devious smile as much as a nervous smile. She glanced over him as she always did… mousey brown hair, plain brown eyes behind glasses that were a little big for his face. He wasn’t exceptionally tall, but he was taller than her by a few inches… Five foot-ten perhaps? She smiled back at him and she saw him blush. “Thank you for coming Marie, have a beautiful night.” He smiled, as he gestured to the total. “Thanks again Ray, I’d have a better night if I had someone to do this shopping for me.” She quirked and smiled at him, handing him a fifty-dollar bill. He blushed again and handed her the change, letting his hand obviously linger a little longer than necessary, but she didn’t mind. She knew he liked her, and she didn’t mind the attention at all. She was comfortable with her looks, and for the most part just shrugged off people’s compliments when they came, but for some reason she didn’t mind it with him. “Marie would you like me to carry these bags out for you?” Ray inquired. “I think I’ve got it for tonight Ray, but thank you anyway. Have a wonderful evening.” She responded. As she grabbed the bags and proceeded toward the exit, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and something told her to turn and look. When she did, she almost wished she hadn’t… The smile on his face was no longer a nervous smile but the smile of a Lion when he knows he’s chosen the perfect prey. He quickly glanced away, seeming to be wiping down the countertop furiously. Standing there in the exit, bags in hands, a whole new set of gooseflesh ran up Marie’s back, arms, and neck… she liked what she had seen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday should have been a productive day, but that man’s smile. Just thinking about it sent the shivers up her spine again, but strangely they went lower places as well. Marie squirmed a bit in her chair and shook her head, running her fingers through her hair. “Focus, focus, focus!” She whispered vehemently. “That would be prudent, Marie. You are on the clock.” Came a voice behind her. Rolling her eyes she turned to her boss and shook her head exhaling. “Look Mike, I really don’t need your shit today. It’s Friday and I’ll be leaving in an hour. Just leave me the hell alone and go on about your business.” “You will not talk to me that way, I am your superior.” He huffed. “No Mike, you’re just a really bad mistake that turned into an even worse lay, and now you’re mad that I want nothing from you.” She rebuked. He didn’t have much to say about that, and turned walking out the door. “Fucker.” she whispered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was only six, but it was already dark as Marie pulled into the drive. Shutting off her engine and opening the door, she reached over and grabbed her purse. She walked up the small path to her front door and put the keys in, but as she turned the lock, she felt a chill run up her spine. She quickly spun looking across her yard, her car, her small tree, and the shrubs under her living room window she saw, but nothing else. She pushed open the door and walked in, closing it behind her and throwing the bolt. She tossed her purse on the couch and flicked the switch for the light. It came on bathing the entire living room and dining area in a soft glow. Marie huffed and kicked off her pumps behind the couch, thinking about how boring her weekend would be, and that bastard of a boss of hers. She had four of the buttons of her blouse undone as she entered the bedroom and she turned to her master bathroom to start the water. Before she could reach for the switch to turn on the light, she stopped suddenly. She’d heard a sound and the prickles running up and down her spine this time were not her imagination. She tried to move but she wasn’t fast enough, she scrambled for her dresser where she kept her small handgun, but a gloved hand clamped onto hers and another around her throat. She was jerked to her feet with her left arm pulled tight behind her back, and she felt a masked cheek press against hers. She hand on her throat wasn’t crushing her throat, but she was panicking. “If you’ll listen and do as I say” Came a whisper ,”I will not harm you or violate you in any way.” She nodded, too afraid to speak. It was a man’s whisper, this much she knew… but there was no smell of cologne or sweat, nor aftershave that she could recognize. She shuddered as he inhaled deeply of her hair, and tried not to scream. “You are to get locks on your windows and a security system. It is far too easy for someone who wants something from this home to simply walk in and take it. Do not be a foolish woman.” Came the whisper again. “You are to lie on the floor facedown, and not turn around until a count of fifty. Do you understand me?” She nodded again, but his grip on her throat tightened. “I will hear your voice when I ask you a question and you will end the answer with the appellation ‘my master’, do you understand me?” Tears streaming down her face, she nodded and croaked, “I understand, my master.” His grips released and she fell to the floor on her stomach. She started counting aloud to fifty, trying to listen for any sound that would indicate movement. When she reached fifty she climbed up using the bed for support and sat on the edge of it. Looking up, she saw that he hadn’t moved. She wasn’t sure what she should do next but her thoughts went completely blank as he reached up and pulled off the mask. “R-r-r-ray?” She stammered. He didn’t respond but the smile he gave her was not the simple nervous one she had seen so many times, but the smile that had made her shiver the night before,…and strangely, sent those similar shivers up her back again despite the situation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
