But THIS is my favorite space subject matter of all time. I love this. This is the best of them all.

Black hole shoots out plasma jets that are even bigger than its galaxy

The galaxy in this picture is Centaurus A, but it's being upstaged in its own cosmic neighborhood. Its central black hole is emitting jets that are a million light-years long...and this is our best look yet at this mysterious phenomenon.

We still don't quite know how supermassive black holes like the one at the heart of Centaurus A create these massive jets. We're fairly sure that, under normal circumstances, these vast plasma trails will glow brightly for millions of years, and under the right circumstances could be reignited a billion years from now. NASA offers a little more insight into what these jets get up to:

These lobes are filled with matter streaming from particle jets near the galaxy's central black hole. Astronomers estimate that matter near the base of these jets races outward at about one-third the speed of light. The enormous energy output of galaxies like Cen A comes from gas falling toward a black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass. Through processes not fully understood, some of this infalling matter is ejected in opposing jets at a substantial fraction of the speed of light. Detailed views of the jet's structure will help astronomers determine how they form. The jets strongly interact with surrounding gas, at times possibly changing a galaxy's rate of star formation. Jets play an important but poorly understood role in the formation and evolution of galaxies.

But this is the best part ... this is what makes me smile.
A MILLION LIGHT YEARS LONG.
One light year = Just under 6 trillion miles.

Im gonna nerd the hell out right now ... so if you have a problem with it, fuck off. (Also Im stuck at home today because Houstons roads are completely flooded out. So Im bored out of my mind.)

I am completely fascinated by VY Canis Majoris - The Largest star ever discovered. 70 Quadrillion Earths would fit into Canis Majoris.

Here is a vid on comparative size starting from the size of our moon to the VY Canis Majoris. Its one of the vids Ive seen that makes me just go wow - and I just dont even know what to think.

( Its short, only about four minutes. ) -------> http://youtu.be/2LUQVzerseI

This is my favorite picture of all time.

To put it in perspective - our galaxy the Milky Way, has 200–400 billion stars.

About This Image
The gravity of a galaxy cluster called SDSS J1004+4112 warps and magnifies the light from a distant quasar. Light from the quasar, the bright core of a galaxy fed by a black hole, appears in the center of this image and four other locations around it. Other distant galaxies appear as arcs.

And YES those are all Galaxies

Oh I love that picture!! I don't get to do much stargazing anymore, the damn high school installed floodlights, but just looking at the stars we can see with the naked eye, then thinking bigger by orders of magnitude...

When I was in Vancouver one summer, I swear the stars were so bright and heavy that I was just awed by it. I have never seen them so bright and clear as I did there. It was just massive.

In Alaska - (fairbanks especially) there is nothing like seeing the northern lights going at it. And then you get to thinking that if earth didnt have its magnetic field we'd be fried.

A few years ago I was lying on the deck of a ship in the Mediterranean at night, just off the coast of Turkey. No light sources to be seen. The sky was breathtaking. Looking up you could see the milky band across the sky. I just looked up and stared, lost in it for hours with nothing but a sense of serenity

When I was a kid I use to get Astronomy magazines
some of the stuff in them was so cool I could never
bare to throw them away. It really annoys me when
my roommate says our solar system is only 10,000
years old and god had to kill all the dinosaurs so they
didn't eat adam and eve................ My second love as
a kid was archaeology!
I think I watched Jurassic park three times in a row
when it was at the movies haha, I'd just come out
ask mum for more money for another ticket and go
Straight back in.

When you look at the us military budget and the nasa
budget, it's enough to make you have a nerd rage...
