Sanity -> Real News (3/4/2011 6:21:12 AM)

According to Hillary Clinton, we dont get real news over here:

"“Al Jazeera has been the leader in that are literally changing people’s minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective,” she said.

“In fact viewership of al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it’s real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you’re getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news which, you know, is not particularly informative to us, let alone foreigners,” she added.

Okay, so heres some "real news" according to Hillary" - todays top story at al-Jazeera to start:

quote:

Israel, Where are you?

While the Arab world joins together in a call for democracy, Israel's democracy is unraveling. As the Arab world demands accountability from its leaders, Israel's leaders are facing investigations and indictments. As the Arab world demands greater social mobility and economic opportunity, Israel's gap between the rich and poor continues to widen.

The Arab world has discovered the power of peaceful demonstration, while Israel continues to rely on military might, rather than peacemaking, to safeguard its national interests. The Arab world appears determined to proactively lead their countries to a more positive future, but Israel appears floundering, leaderless, with no vision and most troubling of all, apathetic. Protesters have flooded Tahrir Square in Cairo, and recently Pearl Square in Manama, Bahrain and other major Arab cities across the region; but Rabin Square in Tel Aviv remains shamefully quiet. It is not suggested here that the Arab world is on the brink of socio-economic and political modernization that will leave Israel languishing behind. But where are the Israelis demanding change that leads to peace and prosperity for all Israelis?

I wonder if Hillary could say al-Jazeera is real news on Canadian tv, knowing its a lie. Or are stupid people like her exempt?

DarkSteven -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 6:32:09 AM)

Um... I agree that Al Jazeera does cover well, and frequently uses different sources than Western media.  But I do not agree with their editorials.

You do see that Clinton was talking about their news coverage and not their editorials (which you cited)?

And I do not consider her stupid, just for the record.

mnottertail -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 6:45:20 AM)

Yup, gotta agree in part, their editorials are like watching Faux Nuze.

Sanity -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 6:52:00 AM)

If thats the editorial why is it in the place of the lead story, with a bolded headline front and center on the top of page one.

The "real news" comes later?

Oh I don't know why an editorial is on the front Sanity.

Oh wait maybe it's because you pulled up the page for the alJazeera Magazine and not the news site.  Funny how you didn't notice where it says alJazeera Magazine.

Here is the link for the news site.   http://english.aljazeera.net/

Good old Sanity, don't let facts confuse the issue.

Thank you for playing.

tazzygirl -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 7:26:31 AM)

Dont assume because our news is delivered that way, that all news is delivered with the headline on the upper left corner. Just beneath the acticle you linked too, Sanity, is the words... latest headlines.

Sanity -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 7:28:56 AM)

No, its only Hillary Clintons news thats delivered that way, with that heavy anti Israel bias presented topmost of all.

tazzygirl -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 7:32:12 AM)

In a magazine, Sanity... not the news, as pointed out.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 7:36:56 AM)

Taz,

That's hysterical from Sanity considering the number of times he has found an editorial that supported his view, then tried to pass it off as a news article.

I have no idea why.  But the Arab culture is different than the Western culture and perhaps they place a greater value on opinions than we do.

Still, editorials and news are not equivalent.

Sanity -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 8:13:41 AM)

What strikes me, Steven, is how this is little different than had she said the KKK newsletter is "real news" because (opinion aside) they have better articles

slvemike4u -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 8:16:00 AM)

Depends on whose addled mind is drawing the comparison DS.In this case it is the addled mind of Sanity that is in question....and as per the evidence....they do seem to be "equivalent".
Now what that says about the Sane one is of course open to interpatation [:D]

Lucylastic -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 8:35:31 AM)

yeah I see where the problem is
He is believing what he thinks without anything  to back it up
and wont admit he is worng,
oh that sounds familiar

Lucy,

Come now.  Sanity admit that he was deliberately being misleading?

I dont think he knows the difference.

Anaxagoras -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 11:14:39 AM)

I partly agree with Hillers view TBH in that the West is loosing the information war. Al Jazeera does set the news agenda to a large extent in the middle east but whether it be in an op-ed in an Internet magazine or a supposedly impartial news article on their prime news site is of limited relevance for the simple reason that the extreme bias often displayed makes it an agenda led organisation. This agenda was very overt with the issuing of the Palestine Papers which the Palestinian Authority themselves shouted about. The articles on the main news site were presented as fact but were highly selective interpretations of the material to forward a political agenda. Saeb Erekat said "What Al Jazeera people are doing is asking Palestinians to shoot me, physically. That's what they are doing. They are saying: 'You are guilty and thus you should be executed'. Speaking for me and my family, they are inciting against our lives." http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/pa-negotiator-u-s-british-citizens-are-responsible-for-leaking-palestine-papers-1.339382 - some of it is extremely nasty - their hugely popular Muslim.net site graphically celebrated the burning of Jews in the Israeli fires in Dec. A senior Al Jazeera executive was also caught saying the station was at the service of Saddam Hussein - their agenda seems to prevade through their coverage http://www.aim.org/aim-column/al-jazeera-the-anti-semite-muslim-cleric-and-the-times/

Moonhead -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 11:32:47 AM)

So the fact that Al jazeera is the only Arab news network that refers to Israel by name rather than as a "Zionist abomination" is completely insignificant, then?

I wouldn't know one way or the other to be honest but Al Jazeera presents itself as a moderate objective news channel. If it only referred to Israel as the "Zionist Entity" a la Iran etc. then surely it would hurt its rep with its big Western audience?

Moonhead -> RE: Real News (3/4/2011 12:45:13 PM)

That was my point: it doesn't.
