The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says affiliates of al-Qaida are radicalizing some American Muslims and that he plans to hold hearings on the threat they pose to the U.S.

Republican congressman Peter King of New York told CNN's "State of the Union" that he sees an international movement with elements in the United States of Muslims becoming more radical and identifying with terrorists

It would be a lot easier if they just kept blaming heavy metal, huh?

A bonus topic in this would be why does the AP choose to run a story about planned Congressional hearings by leading with the protest angle.

DomKen -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 9:25:57 AM)

Because Peter King doing something bigoted and stupid is hardy news any more?

xBullx -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 9:35:31 AM)

I like Rallies.

I've often drempt about running in the Paris to Dakar version. Good fun.

Actually free speach is for all and if their crediblity is lost in unfounded rhetoric and racist implication I doubt their efforts will find much reward.

It's amazing what can be discovered when someone opens their mouth.... Are they eating crow, sucking toe, deep throating heel or professing wisdom.

Should any of us be denied our own right to decide?

tazzygirl -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 9:38:32 AM)

......... reward

.......... sucking

......... deep throating

all topics I can relate too.

It's also amazing what can be ignored when someone opens their mouth, but everybody has politically correct fingers in their ears, going "lalalalalala," as happened with Nidal Hasan.

I believe this practice of political intolerance is too now being noticed in greater measure and coming under direct scrutiny. With that accountability must certainly follow. Or so has been my experience.

I believe Newt was run out of town on a rail and Nancy now holds office in a broom closet.

Worried about terrorism ? The same Peter King that used to stay with top IRA terrorist at a time they were getting arms supplied by Gadaffi ? Dont tell me this is the same Peter King we are talking about.

Okay I know it is him, dont all write, you couldnt really make up such a hypocritical stance if you tried. The great supporter of terrorists who is worried about terrorism. What a load of crap.

Moonhead -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 11:41:56 AM)

Well, that's a given in the 'States, isn't it? Until somebody finally screwed up the nerve to point out the contradiction to the chimp, Gerry Adams spent every saint paddy's day this millennium being wined and dined at the white house.

Hmmmm...............let's see.

Could it be because King is an idiot and the hearings are a sham?

TheHeretic -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 11:55:38 AM)

So you don't think the Hasan matter has anything to teach us, RML?

For a guy who likes to think he's well informed, you should know who that is.

What I think teaches us is history, and you know the old saying, but here we are repeating it.

Japanese internment camps and the great communist infiltration that McCarthy saved us from.

One thing is true, the US needs to be concerned about radicalisation, especially of the younger Muslims. Just as with other groups many are influenced by the internet and constant stories in the news. A heavy handed approach has had the opposite effect of that required in the UK, Muslims have felt more repressed. I am thinking of the Midlands local council that flooded the Muslim area with "Security cameras" All this does is make a minority feel more like a minority. Dialogue and openness is a better way forward.

As for the protest march, that will probably do more good than any Homeland Security debate, since Muslims will feel other faiths are treating them as Americans first, and Muslims second. This is the one fact you need to remember which will benefit the war on terror within the US.

That's a legitimate concern, and a good point, Polite. Coupled with the multicultural approach, further feelings of alienation are going to be inevitable.

Here, we have gone too far on the path of denial. Many people knew there was a problem with Major (soon to be private) Hasan, but no action was taken.

Perhaps what we could both use is a better way of identifying those moving into radicalization, and maybe more importantly, a way to divert them. Elaborate stings (the Portland plot, for example) send a nice message, but tying up undercover operatives to lead every incompetent punk into a prison cell isn't a good use of resources.

outhere69 -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/6/2011 4:23:58 PM)

Well, I saw him misquote Napolitano on an interview with a local NYC station (from his own website).  So yeah, I'm pretty skeptical of his motives.

Why he's calling for that now, 30 days after Napolitano's testimony, is pretty weird.  Shit, he could've called for that immediately.  He could've called a hearing after 12/09 (attempted airplane bombing in Detroit), or 11/09 (Ft Hood shootings).  Instead, he sat on his ass until DHS mentioned radicalization from Yemen.

Engagement with the Muslim population is whats needed Rich. I am convinced part of the reason for the 7/7 bombings in the UK was a responce to the Iraq invasion. While many wont admit it, it was seen as an attack on a Muslim country by UK`s Muslims.

Currently there is a wave of right wing marches going on in the UK which doesnt help the situation. That said, the Muslim population have seen such racism for what it is, a bunch of small minded racists, no more and no less.

Frankly, and you may not agree, the reaction to the proposed Muslim Mosque in NY would have had an alienating effect on US Muslims. The sooner the "all Muslims are bad" B/s stops, in both our countries, the better the situation will get. Muslims terrorist are like their far right counterparts, just a small part of the community.

At this point, is there anybody who isn't so convinced besides Tony Blair?

Ah yes, multiculturalism at its finest.

joether -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/7/2011 6:44:23 AM)

Why target just one religion? Shouldn't we as a nation fight raticalisation regardless of the religion (or lack there of)? Since in this country, there are more Christians then Muslims. It would stand to reason that there would be a greater size group of Christians who are either open to the concept, or willing participant of being radicalized.

While some view Muslims with suspision and hated; they dont even blink to those Christians whom aquire massive quantities of firearms, supplies, and a knowledge of explosives. If this Republican 'wannabe-McCarthy' wished to be taken seriously, why not simply talk about the subject across the board, instead of singling out one religion for pursecution? What percentage of radicalized Christians vote Democrat verse Republican (if they even vote at all)?

TheHeretic -> RE: NYC rally planned against hearing on US Muslims (3/7/2011 6:58:16 AM)

Maybe it's the "Allah akbar!" thing, right before the bullets start flying, Joe? Or perhaps it's because, while any belief can be perverted into a dangerous psychosis (see Loughner and grammar), there is one hell of an encouragement system in place for crazies on an Islamic radicalism path?
