That video is only about four and a half minutes.
I think this is a good thing. As the instructor said women and older people are the most vulnerable in a crime situation.

And another, a local news story about women and guns.

And here's one of the Israeli Defense Force girls!!!

My wife wants a nickle-plated 9 mil with hot pink handles...

I know, I know, I have to keep her out of Bass Pro Shops, but I do love her all the same.

Aynne88 -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/6/2011 7:05:58 PM)

Personally I am a 20 plus year gun owner, I think a lot of women would benefit by having handgun skills.  You can't just buy a woman a gun, most women are scared to even handle them unless they have been around them and used them. Teach her how to shoot, take her to a range, make her feel familiar with it, so that the anti gun people will stop telling us that it's going to be used against us. That's highly unlikely in this house I can guarantee it.

I am a fan of the revolver type myself, I find my S&W .357 far easier than my Ruger P.90, which I am not fluid with enough for me on the slide action.

I don't get the mindset that a gun is a fashion accessory. Hot pink "handles"?  I hope she learns it's not called handles and I hope she knows that even with hot pink, if handled incorrectly it's just a deadly as stainless.

Make sure she gets competent instruction.  The type and look of pistol doesn't matter as much as her knowing how to use it and when not to use it.

The first question I'd ask her is "are you willing to kill?"  If she isn't, I would do all I could to prevent her from having a pistol.  It is NOT a remote control unit for bad guys.

Marini -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/6/2011 7:22:36 PM)

Learning how to properly handle and shoot a gun is certainly on my short list.

Maybe they can give Gabby Gifford free lessons.

This.  100 times over.

Not funny. At all.

You sure are a hoot, a regular Bonnie Parker aren't you.

And no I didn't take the time to give her a lecture about grip panels or any other parts nomenclatures. If she ever does take a serious interest in having a gun of her own, or shooting one of mine I'll be sure to do something just like John suggested in the post after yours.

truckinslave -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/7/2011 8:40:56 AM)

Over the years I had some men bring in wives or girlfriends, wanting to get them a gun of some type even though they were clearly reluctant to have much to do with one. Whenever a woman said something along the lines of "I could never shoot anyone", my reply was: "Lady, he's threatening your firstborn child".
Reluctance strongly tended to evaporate.
One woman who was afraid even to pick one up off the counter wound up taking my class, at the end of which I always invited people to stay and talk to me about shooting some PPC matches. She wound up shooting with us for a couple years before re-marrying and moving out of the area. Girl could shoot, too.
Many women just have trouble imagining themselves in circumstances calling for the use of a gun.

Of course you will tough guy, since I said the same thing first but possess a vagina, it immediately disqualifies the information.

I do love your consistency Bull, I'll give you that.

popeye1250 -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/7/2011 9:50:17 AM)

Back in the 80's when I lived in New Hampshire I took my sister who had never shot a gun down to a sand pit to teach her.
I started her out on a .38 and she took right to it surprising me!
Then I gave her a .357 Magnum and she fired off the first shot and said, "wow, these things have a little kick to them don't they?" And she fired off the other five rounds and said, "is that how you do it?"
She grew up with four brothers so not a lot intimidates her I guess.

Never mind.

Not worth the effort.

Aynne, I suspect this may be hard for you to believe but, I could give two shits about your vagina.

The fact is John's post sounded as if he were suggesting I send her to a certified course, whereas you seemed to suggest I instruct her, souly. While I'd like to thank you for the confidence you seem to have in my skills, I do think someone rehearsed in this exact concept of self defense may be better suited for the job then I.

Though his name escapes me at the moment, the one time dominant of JuliaOcean always made excellent sense in these matters. If my memory is sound, I believe he was a defense instruct of some sort.

So as you can see your false assumptions and apparent gender bias do not serve you all that well in this case.

kalikshama -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/7/2011 12:55:29 PM)

For the record, I sucked with an M-16, did much better with a shotgun, kick ass with a 38 at close range and am competent with a Ruger.

DomYngBlk -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/7/2011 12:59:00 PM)

Doesn't make one bit of sense to me. Waste of time and energy. And not just on women

Loughner got all the way thru the crowd before pulling his weapon and emptying the magazine and killing 6 and wounding about twice as many.   The people who stopped him were unarmed, while armed people ran around scratching their asses, exactly as happened when Hinckley shot at Reagan - who had armed secret service all around him.

It's not that it isn't funny.   It's that it's ignorant of what is most likely to happen in these confrontations.

Criminals rarely attack unless they think they have the drop on you, and if they do, you can be John Fucking Wayne with a BAR, and you're still dead.   What's more, now he's got your BAR.

Giffords could very easily have done what any smart NRA member would have done, and put out 2 lines of concertina at 200 & 20m, and covered them continuously by fire & observation.   But then, how many smart NRA members are there?  And do we really want to pretend we're in the Congo?

Do you suppose it might have been easier to require distributors to post an insurance bond, and then see if they don't pay some attention to who they're selling to - for a change?

LaTigresse -> RE: More women learning how to use guns. (3/7/2011 2:47:18 PM)

Sheesh. Many of us learned to use a gun in elementary school. I might even have my gun safety certificate somewhere. I remember my father taking me target shooting before I was in any danger of PMT or PMS.

Yet now, I choose to not own a hand gun. I know how to fire one competently and have no doubt I can use it in a very deadly manner. I simply do not want one in the house.
