tazzygirl -> Alcohol Swab Recall (3/7/2011 11:00:17 AM)

I know there are many that post here who have diabetes and other illnesses that may require the use of alcohol swabs. If you are someone who uses them, please read the following recall.

Nearly a million cases recalled
On Jan. 3, the Triad Group recalled all lots of alcohol prep pads and wipes, including many sold under the private labels of grocery stores such as Safeway and Kroger and drugstores such as Walgreens and CVS.

The recall covered 975,922 cases of product containing hundreds of millions of individual items, according to FDA documents. The alcohol products are sold in Canada and Europe as well as the United States.

In addition, Triad Group also recalled lots of sterile lubricating jelly in December after the same inspection confirmed problems with contamination and sterility.

The FDA cannot confirm how much of the tainted alcohol product actually has been removed from use, said spokeswoman Shelly Burgess. It's possible that the Triad wipes and pads are still in use by people who already had them in their homes.

So far, the FDA has issued no warning letters or other consequences to H&P Industries, which does business as the Triad Group.

That’s “unfathomable” to Jessica Armstrong, who has been in contact with Sandra Kothari, mother of the Houston toddler who died after contracting bacterial meningitis caused by a Bacillus cereus infection. His parents blame the tainted wipes.

Its a sad case, especially since the FDA knew something was wrong.

But, beyond the politics of it all, I decided to post this here. Its a major health issue, and Im hoping people who use these items check their own supplies.

Triad Group of Hartland, Wis

My suggestion... call the place where you bought them and demand to know if they are recalled.

They should use the kind that are enclosed.  One has to rip the packet to get it out.

tazzygirl -> RE: Alcohol Swab Recall (3/7/2011 11:38:34 AM)

These are the enclosed type. pahunk. Individual packets, just like the hospitals use. The contamination came from the manufactoring plant.

Ouch.  Seems like a pretty basic product. I hope they get it resolved.

tazzygirl -> RE: Alcohol Swab Recall (3/7/2011 11:58:41 AM)

Basic.. and until now, considered sterile. I hope they do too. Its just the one company though. And they did voluntarily recall.

I am going to check tomorrow and see if this is the same company that we got our thermometer wipes from, as they were recalled a few weeks ago. I can't wait to get a replacement. My ladies have plenty of work without having to go through all the hassle of sanitizing from a bottle of spray........and, of course, since the government is involved, they just can't go buy some more.....oh no, we have to wade through 100 feet of red tape first!

...when I worked at the group homes there were times.. not real frequent=- but enough that we just bought  XYZ and skipped the paper work.  It was just easier some some minor purchases. Notable gas for the van.  ..enough so we would not break down... but it was always kept empty so people did not drive it too much.  lol
