Unfortunate the economy will not improve significantly although the expiration of the Bush tax cuts may help avoid a recession. On a positive note it may give liberals in Canada an opportunity to replace the conservative government.

The Astonishing Stupidity of Not Raising Taxes on the Rich When Budgets Are Tight

History shows that when spending is cut -- in the name of balancing the budget -- recessions immediately follow.

Even the Keynesians agree that raising taxes on anybody in a recession is asinine. Try using a real source sometime, instead of a clueless author's blog. You might ask him what the history of spending cuts accompanied by tax cuts has done in the past.

The linked article makes direct connection to the tax increase and recovery. It is one-dimensional thinking. Economy is a system and we need to consider all important variables in order to make a meaningful prediction. General consensus seems to be that after WW II the recovery was mostly driven by worldwide demand for goods and  the only truly intact economy grew as a result. Obviously the situation today is reversed: over-supply of goods  from the other side and the US productive economy weak.  Tax increase would not solve anything except the government waste would increase. For me the trade deficit number is very important indicator. It is increasing faster than exports. My surprise is that the government does practically nothing to make structural changes. Are the globalist conspiracy theories correct and sinking the US economy is by design, or the destruction is a result of corruption, incompetence or both?

Brain, I did not read any link(s) or replie(s). I am not concerned with what they think right now.

Let me lay this on you, people with real money have no country, they don't need one. Yank a guy's crank on taxes and he will just emmigrate, and take whatever part of his business that existed here with him, to his "new" country. Then we get nothing.

With the advent of seemingly unlimited credit and the fact that the money will never be paid back, taxes are really just a form of social engineering.

Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more. I think that was Buffalo Springfield, no, , ,,,, no it was Ten Years After. I'd love to change the world. I am an accomplished troubleshooter, problem solver.

But I don't know what to do.

You see solutions, but do not have them fully thought out. It is not that simple. Believe me I have given years of thought to this and the only way is to change the people, the commoner. We can be free, if we really want to be. But we don't.

More some other time. When ready, just poke me with a stick.

T^T

I don't believe the economic problems are purely based on levels of spending and taxation, but also embrace matters such as technology and how it is used, infrastructure, investment and so on. If it were that simple then we wouldn't be seeing the sort of economic problems we are seeing now.

But we are, and it isn't.

Incompetence resulting from blind adherence to failed ideology and the refusal to adapt to the real world.

Ron Paul style isloationism? Fail
Leftist style overregulation and taxation? Fail
Ensuring a level playing field for imports and exports? Fail

We cannot compete on wages. If official government policy is to demonize corporations, strip them of their profits via misguided "green" initiatives and direct taxation, and not enforce safety and quality standards on imports as diligently as domestic goods, we will rapidly achieve Woody Allen's vision (Annie Hall, I think?) of an economy where we are all insurance salesman selling policies to each other.

What you said sounds good but there’s no substituting for a qualified experienced economist like Paul Krugman who knows which economic policies are appropriate at particular times. He would know where tax cuts and tax increases are needed. He would also know what to do about improving exports to correct the trade imbalance. Another economist I also think would be very helpful would be Robert Reich. He has written a few books recently that talk about what to do to fix the present economic problems.  So I agree that we need to consider all economic variables or a comprehensive approach and we need to have a well-educated experienced economist to do it.

GOP Strategy for Disaster Capitalism
Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine, talks with Rachel Maddow about Republicans using economic crisis (real or ginned up) as an excuse to push through radical conservative and corporate agenda items.

Geesh, Brain, this was polarized enough before you dropped Krugman's name. The guy's anathema to conservatives. And why do you think he would have what it takes to do implementarion of cutting? He's a theorist.

The problem is that the economy sucks and will not respond well to increased taxes or spending cuts, and the national debt is unsustainable and requires cuts or tax increases. There are no good options.

Krugman won the Nobel Prize in economics for a reason and I think it makes him the most qualified to get the economy moving in the right direction. And if he's not, we will at least find out if those guys that decide who gets a Nobel Prize know what they're doing.

The nobel prize cuts no mustard with neocons: they gave Carter and Obama those things as well, so it must be a worthless award.
