Seatonstomb -> Religion? (3/9/2011 12:03:21 PM)

I tend to see most religions as only as good as the worst thing done in their name or the most evil of their followers. Do other agree or disagree.
As in the Holocaust (first crusade) committed by christians. Also the Inquisition and witch burnings. All the abuse done by priests and other religious figures.

Disagree.

You need to separate the two... Religion...and the followers….Then take a fresh look.

Ghandi once said of us, "I admire your Christ. I detest what most Christians did in His name".

As a Christian, I agree with the Mahatma.

Are they separable? A religion without followers isn't a religion, surely? Religion is made by the followers.

Followers of any religion fall into different categories, lip service, devout, and fanatic. It is the fanatics of any religion that one needs to worry about.

Are you speaking of the Holocaust of 1938-1945? I'm sure you know there were earlier Crusades before then.

I look at the worst acts of persons within a professed religion as an abberation of that religion.

Why  to dig out historical things from the distant past and pretend it has something to do with current affairs? The Christianity poses no threat of violence:  just an opposite, it prevents violence.

Okay so christian anti-abortion activists who kill abortion doctors, burn down abortion clinics, bomb abortion clinics are not involved in violence.

Pray tell, what exactly are they involved in?

The Christian militias that fought against Muslims in Lebanon, were not involved in violence?

The Catholic and Protestant terrorists in Northern Ireland are not involved in violence?

You really need to get out more often.

That's not a good way to assess anything - the worst things done by an entity.

Three out of the four were paid for their irreverent... and comical... positions.

The last wanted to outlaw fantasy books for children.

One cannot squeeze their eyes in the same place that you can.

Perspective! It is important!!!!

Aneirin -> RE: Religion? (3/9/2011 8:59:14 PM)

Religion is a handy vehicle for the dangerous in society to use to achieve their goals, that being, if religion did not exist, the sick bastards would find some other organisation to infiltrate to get their kicks.

In the past, crusades and witch burnings were all about power over others, anyone who had a different idea was a threat, threats were destroyed so they would not influence others to challenge the de facto power of the church. Burn a 'witch' now and again has the habit of reinforcing the fear of the church. The inquisition, well, well, this is a BDSM website, work that one out for yourself.

Some say the Bible and the Qur'an are full of hate, some say the Bible and the Qur'an are full of love and peace, quite often it is whilst one can see the positive in one, they see the negative in the other, that depending on the preferred choice of reading material and which way one grinds their axe if they have an axe to grind, but the truth is, if you look objectively at both books, they both contain the same, love and hate in  roughly equal proportions, so that being what one takes from those books is wholely dependant on the readers personal agenda

Don't you agree that various followers of the same religion have vastly different interpretations of the same dogma?

For instance perhaps a billion followers of Islam live their lives ascribing to the teachings of the Quran that promote peace, tolerance, and charity.

But perhaps a few hundreds of thousands ascribe to the radical interpretation and the belief that all manner of forces are justified to achieve their ends and force their interpreted religion on others.

The same can be said of the other main religions.

The written teachings of the religion are the same for both groups so the religion does not change but people do and this difference needs to be separated.

So it would be wrong to condemn a religion because of the actions of the few without praising it for the actions of the many.

Disagree. Why not see a religion as the sum of all things, good or bad, that have ever been done in its name?

pam

P.S.- On a separate note, i would hate to be judged as a person based solely on the worst thing i've ever done.

I believe the major issues here are not religious. One does not need to be a christian to oppose abortion. Lebanon and Ireland examples are just power struggles [the purpose is not to spread religion]. Same way are the modern Muslim nations struggles; religion adds strength to the actions, but the goals usually are not religious (national independence, getting foreign robber barons out, territorial fight among ethnic groups for economic reasons). In summary, we would see similar things without religion.
