Religion is a handy vehicle for the dangerous in society to use to achieve their goals, that being, if religion did not exist, the sick bastards would find some other organisation to infiltrate to get their kicks. In the past, crusades and witch burnings were all about power over others, anyone who had a different idea was a threat, threats were destroyed so they would not influence others to challenge the de facto power of the church. Burn a 'witch' now and again has the habit of reinforcing the fear of the church. The inquisition, well, well, this is a BDSM website, work that one out for yourself. Some say the Bible and the Qur'an are full of hate, some say the Bible and the Qur'an are full of love and peace, quite often it is whilst one can see the positive in one, they see the negative in the other, that depending on the preferred choice of reading material and which way one grinds their axe if they have an axe to grind, but the truth is, if you look objectively at both books, they both contain the same, love and hate in roughly equal proportions, so that being what one takes from those books is wholely dependant on the readers personal agenda
