SAMHAIN09 -> What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/13/2011 10:03:55 PM)

Okay I just saw this Jerry Springer footage and I feel that it was probably staged because one the dominatrix girlfriend and vanilla boyfriend literally look like they are trying to piss each other off and second those subs seem way to wild.

Seriously? It's Jerry Springer. All of his shows are staged.

sirssubk2008 -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/13/2011 10:58:00 PM)

Has Jerry had a show yet that hasn't been staged?

Jennislut -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/13/2011 11:33:16 PM)

that's a weird show - you americans have some weird ass tv

IronBear -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 3:11:20 AM)

Based on the comments by a largish number of Aussies, Jerry is not doing you guys any favors.. The image of Americans has gone front the clean cut kid with naturally good manners, to the surfer dudes to (Jerry mob) white trash..  Sad really when those ??Comedians?? he has on his show is used to build a image representing all Americans... I'd rather watch some oaf get his ass kicked on WWF with all the crap and hype there are few precious moments .. Jerry nill just am annoyed/angry and cynical at the end of they show and want my money back (had I paid to watch it) they should pay audiences live and on TV to watch the silliness..

Yes it is. I have watched Benny Hill in the past and I never thought the people on his show represented all of England. Why would anyone be silly enough to think Jerry represents the US?

LaTigresse -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 4:12:16 AM)

I don't know what is more pathetic.

That Springer type shows (most all reality tv shit) exists......and that there are apparently a lot of dumbasses that watch it.

That non US citizens actually see that as a 'real' example of US citizens.

That I see enough evidence, even on here, that it sometimes, isn't that fictitious.

TotalDiscipline -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 4:18:35 AM)

I think it is a mixture.
Partly staged..so that those participating..get angry or freak.
You just have to give short fused weirdo's a reason to get angry...and you know you have a show.

( ps. We know that those people are not the examples of "average" Americans. We have the same kind of shows here, with local weirdo's)

Prinsexx -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 4:49:37 AM)

To me it's just an example of an American show going for ratings and staging what the producers think will sell.
Jerry Springer sold out to that years ago. The show itself exists only because it
earns from the ads which are slotted.
It's the 'white-trailer-trash' reality tv show.
It seems to me that even the audience on this show will do anything for their few moments of celebrity.
But then there's folks who also believe they are their avatars, that the world is watching when they change their profiles and that they are in actual relationship when they send you what they believe is a meaningful you tube link.
No wonder The King's Speech gets awards.

Exactly. Is this show even on? I thought it went off the air years ago.  Didn't watch it then, wouldn't watch it (or any other show like it) now, and my friends don't either.

Generalizations usually suck.

Prinsexx -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 5:15:02 AM)

If it's on or not on air at the moment the priciple of production would have been the same.
Springer is surroounded by media specialists who dream up the 'ironic' hook for each show for him.
The mediated irony here (old school dramatic irony) is not the shock value of the bdsm troika.
The irony is that we already know about bdsm, as an audience, but the dork who didn't know his girl friend is into it? that's the one our attention is on.
And the domme? well further shock value (or not) is that she kinda kisses the girl.
What a load of bog shite...except I suppose the same producers have a sure fire way of assessing the ratings and who's watching it. Or rather who's bothering to give it four seconds of their two minute attention span whilst micro waving some chips.
Who cares whether the bdsm is real or not?

That's the same thing.  The only reason that Springer exists is because he has a viewership.

SexyBossyBBW -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 6:17:36 AM)

I don't watch.  I felt compelled to watch because of this thread, but that was still a colossal mistake.
Disorganized, out of control people, who hardly reflect the average/mass population.   I don't hate Jerry Springer for making the almighty God/dollar using the lowest common denominator.    M

DesFIP -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 7:13:13 AM)

There are a lot of unhealthy people out there who are willing to humiliate themselves to no end in order to be on tv. Those people are always the ones Springer features.

Ooooh, I should never ever admit this in public but here we go...
I know not one, but two people who have been on Jerry (You might say I had an interesting childhood and had some wild and way out there acquaintances...something about taking the path chosen less often). One was on for "I hate my best friends GF," and the other was a guy two crazy ass broads were fighting over. Now, this was years and years ago, but neither was staged. In fact, in the first example, the two cats were childhood friends and didn't speak for years after the one bushwhacked the other on the show.
Just saying...

IronBear -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 8:08:40 AM)

It is completely understandable that there will be a reasonable portion of any given population who will believe (for a number of reasons onto of them being gullible), that what is portrayed on Springer (or for that matter "My name Is Earl") is an accurate representation of American Society just as the same or similar audience watching Benny Hill  (or that show earlier about the Father & Son, Rag & Bone merchants)may believe this is typical of English Society. It is surprising how many take soaps at face value and forget these are fictitious stories. Reality TV has done much to sell all sorts of garbage.. I know a bloke in our street who watches every episode of Judge Judy and believes that the law as she interprets it in the US is valid here.  a week he is currently banned from court without a Solicitor because his arguments when he was suing up to 15 people weekly and quoting as legal fact Judge Judy.. (Yeah we have some doozies here too)..

Disclaimer:
I do know the difference between the Springer show and Real America.. been in and out of the US often enough and lived there for a couple of years too ..

stellauk -> RE: What do you think of this footage staged or not staged? (3/14/2011 8:32:45 AM)

Here's your answer:

Starnow - where talent gets discovered

The shows are scripted and the 'people' who appear in the shows are... (wait for it) .. paid actors.

Starnow is one of the best known casting websites for reality TV shows.

In the clip in the OP you can even tell that it's scripted by some of the things which are being said.

The guy in particular isn't projecting the same way as you would if you were coming in off the street. There's hardly any 'verbal' punctuation words, such as 'erm', 'um' that people come out with whilst they're thinking and talking at the same time.

As for the audience, they're .. (wait for it) ... film extras.

It's no different from television commercials and most game shows - they're all actors.

What you're looking at is a show put together from actors, both trained and untrained at the bottom of the film industry and a lot of people who are looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. They're the same people who make up the numbers in feature films, television shows, act in independent films, student films, television commercials, corporate videos and so on.

Shows like Jerry Springer bug me, and they bug me deeply because they have a detrimental effect on the industry as a whole and they are not a fair or even remotely accurate reflection of the issues which they present.

It's just another way of making money out of other people's misfortunes and reinforcing cultural and social stereotypes that maybe we should be getting away from.

I tried (and failed) to put out a short independent movie with a BDSM theme last year and went through dozens of these actors and was filming it on premises owned by the organizers of LAM (the London Alternative Market).

The movie was set in an office, and I can't tell you the issues I had and the arguments in trying to stop these actors getting the wrong idea. The first actress I cast in the role of the domme turned up on set, in an office, wearing a corset and boots. The second actress in the role of the domme got it despite not having any contact with the BDSM community, she just dressed normally and to her credit she created a very real, credible character of the typical English domme - someone you wouldn't tell is a domme if you met her in a supermarket.

I actually managed to complete the filming in one location but needed to reshoot it in another and it got to the point where I had problems finding actors prepared to develop characters that I wanted and I just got tired of arguing with actors over how to play a dominant woman or male submissive. The film is only 36 minutes long, and the repeated casting calls were starting to damage my credibility as a director, and I cannot allow that.

I might go back to it if I can find two women and a guy in the community who want to appear in a short independent movie and can make it to London for the filming on 2-3 Sundays. But at the moment I am busy on other projects and it's on the back burner so to speak.

But yes, the Jerry Springer shows and the clip in the OP is definitely staged.. all of it.

Reality TV doesn't so much show reality but instead tries to create it for the sake of profit.
