To the OP...I guess the lone guy on the sidewalk is a goner.

I suppose if your breaks fail and you go headlong into 5 people then you haven't chosen that path. Whereas if you swerve to kill the 1, then you've chosen to kill that person. Puts a different dimension on it?

And what if that 1 person is you? Would you expect the driver to kill you to save 5 people?

Have you ever really had your brakes fail?

I did once.  I was on route 1 in Maine and it scared the living shit out of Me.

I was scared to death that I would hit a child.

I never got in that car again.

Uhhh.............you do know those can be repaired.

pahunkboy -> RE: Dilemma for the board.... (3/14/2011 12:54:37 PM)

What do you think the emergency brake is for?

ashjor911 -> RE: Dilemma for the board.... (3/14/2011 1:04:13 PM)

as I said
quote:

Every Life is Sacred

so your driver can hit no one.....
if the driver's brakes fail & he must hit something or someone to stop his own car

all he should do simply is to hit a stopping car or a wall or a street lamp
Why is all that he can think of is killing .... someone Father ... Someone Son ...etc...

If I was the driver & i Hit a wall & got Injured... its better than beeing a killer.

To keep a parked car from rolling. For stopping a moving vehicle they arent much better than sticking your foot out the door and dragging it.

A car driver's brakes fail.

Is the car driver justified in swerving onto the pavement and killing one person walking down the path, in order to avoid killing 5 people walking across the road?

If he accelerate and steers carefully can he hit all 6?

You get double points for that.

mnottertail -> RE: Dilemma for the board.... (3/14/2011 1:13:38 PM)

you can turn off the engine, even try to slam the transmission in park, hope your parking brake has a little cow hoof left and the cable isn't rusted to the guides (very ford that) and try to hit the lone republican.

That's absolutely wrong, but why break your streak Willbeur?

Trust me, I know this from experience.

And it wasn't that great of an experience.

Is a Parking Brake the Same as an Emergency Brake?

The terms parking brake and emergency brake are used interchangeably in the automotive world to refer to a purely mechanical brake system which can be actuated in the event of hydraulic failure, or used to secure a car when the motor is off and the car is parked. The term used depends on the scenario. In an emergency situation, the emergency or e-brake can be used to stop a car safely. In daily use, the parking brake is used as a safety measure to prevent runaways. Like the rest of the brake system, the parking brake should be regularly inspected to ensure that it is performing properly.

The parking brake consists of a series of steel cables which run from the rear brakes to a pedal or lever by the seat of the driver. When the driver activates the parking brake, the cables pull taut, bringing the brake pads into contact with the surface of the brake and stopping the car, or preventing it from moving. Because the cables are attached to a ratcheting lever or pedal, when the driver removes the hand or foot used to activate the parking brake, the brake will still hold. In order to remove the brake, the driver must take another action, such as pressing a button and lowering the lever.

Tough predicament to be in, but if one had time to even choose, it's the person on the sidewalk.
Even pilots in planes that are tumbling to the ground will try to crash where there are the least amount of casualties.
I wonder, are they ever ticketed with reckless flying?

ashjor911 -> RE: Dilemma for the board.... (3/14/2011 1:20:14 PM)

Hey OP try to google Upshifting . or reverse shifting
its meant to shift up ....it makes the car go slower by shifting ... till its ok to use your handbreak or emergency brake
example:
I am driving in my 4th gear & i hade to stop but i have a 500 meters to stop, I shift Up to 3rd gear & slowly breaking by hand gear
want to stop before 300 or 200 or even 10 shift up 3 gears up & hold on to the steering wheel.

If your can is an automatic gear shifter & you are driving in D .... simply trage it down to L or 1 or 2
L1 L2 in some cars foe up shifting
its not much help in emergency cases also...

some on this here board should be charged with feckless lying.

windchymes -> RE: Dilemma for the board.... (3/14/2011 1:31:38 PM)

I didn't check, but I suppose the sentencing for one count of vehicular manslaughter carries a lot less time than the sentence for five counts. Not to mention the losses incurred from five civil lawsuits instead of just one.

Youre experience in anything has as much to do with the real world as an episode of West Wing.

"Although sometimes known as an emergency brake, using it in any emergency where the footbrake is still operational is likely to badly upset the brake balance of the car and vastly increase the likelihood of loss of control of the vehicle, for example by initiating a rear-wheel skid. Additionally, the stopping force provided by using the handbrake instead of or in addition to the footbrake is usually small and would not significantly aid in stopping the vehicle, again because it usually operates on the rear wheels"

Do you think it would take too much time out of your busy schedule to cite your sources?

And yes, I did have a brake failure where I used the emergency brake, combined with downshifting to stop.

But I am curious about your quote.  Do you or the author of your quote know there are are still a significant amount of rear-wheel drive vehicles?

1. Remove key from ignition.
2. Apply emergency brake.
3. Lay on horn as a warning.
4. Pray or curse, as per inclination.

i think the driver is justified, but the thought of it just chills me.

On a happier note: (sort of)
A while ago there was a private plane that crashed near a local school during recess. The two pilots died rather than crashing it into the playground.
