i can think oof two reasons, one chat does not work for everyone, and messengers are faster (agreeing with needlesandpins) also maybe messengers have cam options, not sure about CM on that one

i have to say may, for i am new here and have no idea who anyone is or their reputation. however, it's nothing i'd take notice of anyway.

some people prefer IM clients to the slow c-mail system. if you don't want to talk that way, simply decline.

I hate when people ask if I have Skype.  Skype is gay.

I've been here a long time, and I've never been asked to take it off CM. I've been asked to just plain take off more than a few times, however.

Can We continue this thread on MSN or Yahoo messenger?

I've always felt it was kind of hilarious people were so reticent to move conversations over to a different medium that tends to function better. The cm chat works pretty poorly for me when it does work, and when you're talking a conversation online you really have no way of knowing whether you missed a line or not. I'll take reliability, but I digress.
Pretty much every chat program ever is free to create an account on, some of those take about 40-50 seconds to whip up an account (though some are much slower, especially since bots with image recognition are often used to make them for marketing). This means you can come up with something in no way tied to you off the top of your head, and pow, it's your new screen name. Basically if safety is the concern, you're just as safe either place.

For me its the ones who want to move to fast that want to write outside of collarme after sometimes just one mail here. One wanted to meet me at a bar at night in a bad town. If it turns out I dont want to talk farther then they will keep writing me at my email address or in a instant message after being clear I am not interested. Not saying months of writing here but not giving out my address so fast like some want.

Look, its simple really...if they want your addy to fast for your comfort, then just say no. If they get pissed off, then Block & Delete. They weren't a match for you anyway. I would have thought that was pretty obvious.

I hate chat programs because it seems like there is a time limit on when to reply just for the sake of being polite.  Compared to e-mail or something where you can do your day-to-day life while occasionally building up a message, it's that a chat requires more of my undivided attention which detracts from other subjects of interest to me.

Frankly, I don't like to type for long periods of time.  It's painful.  If someone wants a complex exchange or wants to move forward toward a meeting.  I want to move to phone as soon as possible.  It would take hours to cover the ground you can in five minutes of give and take on the phone.
