Despite others' worst-case scenarios, it is very possible for two mature adults to work together and maintain a healthy relationship. It is also possible for two mature adults to have a relationship, end it and still continue to work together without problems. The key, in my opinion, is that phrase "mature." Are you? Is he? If so, it can very well work.
As far as references from exes, I personally consider that a colossal waste of time. If they are still friends, their reference will be skewed and if they aren't, it will be skewed. Use your own judgment, not that of some ex.
