travelingjinx -> Any South-Central PA, trans-friendly employers? (3/16/2011 2:49:06 PM)

I'm in Gettysburg. I am having difficulty getting a job, because the PA name change protocol is so bizarre, and I am waiting for a lawyer to contact me back. I have filled out name change applications in other states while I was itinerant (I'm not anymore), and the process was much easier: But I am here to stay for a while, and I really need to find a source of income until I can get my name changed on documents.

Are you an employer that can either offer me an under-the-table job - or a job where I can have male-listed documents while still being a girl? I live full-time, and I am not willing to compromise my gender for the sake of employment. I have applied for standard, low-wage jobs in the past: But every one of the 40-some I applied to didn't accept the contrast between my legal information and my persona.

If you are able to help me, please be within either a close distance, able to provide transportation, or offering a position which I can do on my home computer.

My skills include:
-Conversational German and Mandarin Chinese
-104 WPM
-Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access

My hobbies include:
-Studying holistic health and alternative medicine (especially in the fields of gerontology and nutrition)
-Playing piano (13 years) and singing (13 years)
-Writing poetry
-Gardening (I have taken high school agricultural courses, including greenhouse management, if you are offering a horticultural position)
-Exercising (aerobics, some Ashtanga yoga, light weight training, and deep meditation)

If you believe I could be a candidate for a position you have open, please message me with details about who you are, what the position is, and what you would like to know about me to make this happen efficiently.

DO NOT CONTACT ME IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ESCORT, STRIPPER, PROSTITUTE, OR IF YOU ARE GOING TO PROPOSE ANYTHING SEXUAL TO ME. I WILL IMMEDIATELY BLOCK YOU.

Thank you for reading this!

There is a transgender community in York and another in Harrisburg. You might want to start searching in those areas. Best wishes for a successful outcome!

I don't think it's your transgenderism that's the issue. It's that you keep changing your name. How many times have you changed it? I"d be suspicious of hiring someone who felt a need to always have a new name.

If you can translate English into German or Simple Han, please PM me. (This would be the occasional freelance job.)

This will only be the first and only time I am changing my name: The other times, I had filled out the applications, but didn't have the chance to send them in before having to move (often to a different state).

You may want to check out www.usajobs.gov  it's the federal government website.  Believe it or not, the feds are actually quite accustomed and adept at dealing with transgendered people. Not every agency the same way, but you would be surprised how many fed agencies have decent track records.  (SSA has a LOT of MTF's for some reason)

When you fill out a federal application (of any kind, any agency) it's called an OP612--the key is to be honest.  Not TMI--just honest.
So if it asks what names you worked under, list them.  They are looking for honesty and consistency--mostly congruence.  If what you say matches all of your records on file, it's congruent--and not an issue.  If you try to hide a name change etc. it will get you flagged.

You can also look at jobs that serve the LGBT community--at least there you can be completely open and upfront.  There are also a surprising number of trans-friendly corporations in places you'd never expect--XEROX, for example.  Keep applying and don't give up--good luck with your paperwork.

edited to add:  some cities have LGBT job fairs.  We actually had a TG/TS job fair in the Baltimore Metro area.  Check out your local LGBT center to see if they have agencies or services to assist you.

ok, I didn't get that from your post. Your post made it sound like you had already changed your name numerous times. What also could be holding you back is that you move often. A lot of companies will see you as transient and not stable enough to stay with their company. They don't want short term employees most times.

But ya know it's tough out there for everyone. Tons of people are seeking work and not finding anything.

I can put you in touch with someone who will know.  She's a GSTSTVA alliance coordinator in PA.  Or whatever the acronym is now.

It would require absolute secrecy from you, because this account is not tied to my real name or any other internet handles I use.  And the person in question is a teacher, so there is even more secrecy involved.

And I would be really upset if something happened to upset the balance.
