joether -> Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 12:04:09 AM)

Ever notice how often people use that expression? I hear it all over the place, and yet, I'm struck by the idea, that I don't remeber its usage before three or four years ago. Maybe it wasn't used as much or often or widely known? Still, anyone have have an idea of the origins of this phrase?

People use it, instead of saying 'ummm', 'uh...', 'er...'. It is often used when someone is replying to someone else's comment, and that mere pause gives them time to put words together from a collection of thoughts.

Arpig -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 12:19:59 AM)

Nope, I never really noticed it before. Though I expect I will from now on.

MistressRosalyn -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 12:44:37 AM)

I've been aware of "Here's the thing" for quite a while, and don't forget the ubiquitous "The point is"...

heartcream -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 12:54:53 AM)

It has been around for yonks and yonks. Just like the word "whatever" and "random". People are using it more as a go to phrase much the same as "whatever" and "random" has already occurred.

People have been saying "Here's the thing" fo evah! Have you noticed we are using "Honestly" quite a bit these days too.

Ah Language give me a slurp, Ise lub it! One English prof sitting at the bar told me the way kids speak is changing the dictionary. "Suicided" is apparently now a word thanks to the youngins sayin things like "He suicided yesterday".

This is a cool article about language

MaxsGirl -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 1:20:51 AM)

I'm irritated by the way the language is evolving, especially very recently.  Can we please go back to Middle English now?

purepleasure -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 3:15:03 AM)

aww, Maxsgirl, must we?

I play Scrabble on pogo ALOT, and suicided scored me some major points as well as a bingo.

stellauk -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 3:21:18 AM)

It's one of those new expressions, innit?

aerten -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 3:30:13 AM)

i've been aware of "here's the thing" since i was a teenager. It wasn't as common then as it is now, but i remember a teacher that used it a lot. It's become common enough that we have a one stroke brief for it in my steno class.

VaguelyCurious -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 4:40:47 AM)

My personal favourite is 'what it is, is that...[whatever it is]'.

Less common, but funnier.

divi -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 4:59:32 AM)

I like the one .. it is what it is

lazarus1983 -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 7:58:50 AM)

Whenever I catch people saying that, I always interrupt with, 'Tell me the thing!'

heartcream -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 8:45:16 AM)

What grates me the wrong way is (how commonplace and all over the land) the nasal tones the girls are using these days. Please stop.

MercTech -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 11:15:14 AM)

Here is the thing of importance in this thread... shorthand cliches often sound silly when you actually think about them.

Any expression that actually utilizes full words is vastly preferable to the rampant use of text speak in daily conversations.

I despair over the future generation's ability to communicate effectively and more so, with color and flourish.

Well, here's the thang... we do not really care about all that Red, we want to hear more about the whole "Breathless from multiple orgasms" thang.

I hate when people waste my time.

Hangs head. I know, it is so boring to intellectualize. I will have to find a thread to insert my breathless orgasms into, or barring that, find someone to insert something that would produce said orgasms.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Here's the thing... (3/17/2011 3:56:00 PM)

Here's the thing....................I got confused and lost my thoughts when Red was talking about orgasms.   [:)]
