Who are the naysayers?

ChiDS -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 3:37:31 PM)

I don't care to go back to previous threads and search for all the people who argued their point with me.  The most common being that Japan is perfectly under control.  No way radiation could ever reach the west coast.  I even had one guy sayin "We'll you won't catch me rushin out to buy KI."  Side note: bet that guy is fucked now, cuz my buddy in Washington has informed me you can't find KI anywhere now.  It's all sold out all over the west coast.  He had to settle for a dirty bomb kit on a 2 day wait since he paid extra.  Otherwise it was a 7 day wait.  For those of you who care to think about it.  If low level radiation has just hit the west coast and the BIG explosion was 2 days after this whole thing began.  You do the math on how long you got till the bulk of the radiation hits you.  As I said before, my best wishes go out to all of you.  I would have rather had been wrong.

Our west coast or Japans?

ChiDS -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 3:49:36 PM)

Both.  No one deserves that.

EternalHoH -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 3:53:25 PM)

The bullet points say it went up to a level 5.  Were not all the Chicken Littles saying it was a level 6 a few days ago?

Was I one of those people?

No one in the US needs to be taking KI because of Japan. Iodine-131 simply does not last long enough to be a threat to people on the US west coast.

ChiDS -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 5:02:15 PM)

I dunno man, I've heard conflicting research so much now.  I don't think I would take anyone's word for it.  I've read up on it and scientists certainly don't agree with each other on the subject of if the WC should worry or not.  I would much rather be prepared and wrong than the alternative.  I'm also very aware of the risks even taking KI period.  But all in all, I just don't trust the media's word.  After all, according to them, everything was under control.

outhere69 -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 5:06:25 PM)

To the OP:

Umm, dude,  they were saying that some of the workers had severe radiation illness [eta] several days ago.

And you DID note, eh?  that the level hitting the west coast is 1 billionth of the amount that would harm people.  That's 0.000000001 .  So how is that dangerous?

Most of the radioactive shit from Japan would get rained out of the atmosphere.  Did people use KI pills during the Soviet Union's above-ground atomic testing?  Nope.  Some folks in the US probably should have due to our own testing, though.

Also just to state it for the record.  I never said I totally agree with the source I provided.  I only provided it, because it supported part of my argument from another thread.  I have, however said that I have been reading up and listening to multiple scientific views on the subject.  I also said that they all seem to disagree with one another.  My buddy in Washington heard from his family in Fresno. That Fresno is now reporting a beta radiation level of 233cpm.  All I am trying to say.  Is if his family is correct.  Just think how high it's going to go in about 48 hours when the bulk of that radiation hits them.

That data's from an Alex Jones link that I'm seeing on Facebook.  The info from Radnet states "these levels are thousands of times below any conservative level of concern".

Which scientists are you referring to?  Hopefully not the ones Ann Coulter was consulting.

Yup an uptick in Xenon-133 from Japan has been detected.

"It described the exposure as "approximately one-millionth of the dose rate that a person normally receives from rocks, bricks, the sun and other natural background sources."

I'll take my chance with having my usual breakfast at the beach tomorrow.

If your REALLY worried about your health as it concerns radiation from Japan; go ask a medical doctor. Pretty sure they will know the effects of radiation on the human body, and if not, know how to look it up. Alternatively, you might use A US Goverment Resource for information. Better then running around aimlessly, screaming at the top of your lungs and flailing your arms in different directions, eh? [:D]

Now for the BOLD part....

If your demanding the world make sense, and everything fits in to nice, easily understood concepts and categories....you'll be waiting a long time. The 'media' as you call it, is comprised of hundreds if not thousands of individuals. They are not perfect (like your demanding apparently), and do make mistakes. Even well thought out plans can be torn up by unexpected events.

Is that on youtube? Do you have a link?

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 7:24:59 PM)

Half-life of the primary isotope of I-130 is 12.3h, I think. I just looked it up in the Rubber Bible, but forgot it already, sort of. Both negative beta and gamma emitter. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. one gets way more exposure to ionizing radiation flying SF-ATL.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 7:57:50 PM)

I think iodine-131 is the problem, not -130. That's got a half-life of 8 days, so you're looking at a few months before it decays to a safe level.

But still, the point stands - as long as it doesn't get much worse than it is, the effects are likely to remain rather localized. It's only if they have a catastrophic meltdown of one of the  cores, or one of the spent fuels pods, that people outside of Japan have to worry very much. And while that's the direction it seems to be heading, we're not there yet, and may still take a different fork in the road before it gets to that point. Fingers crossed, everyone.

I-131 is the fission product. With the relatively short half life it is primarily a threat to people who drink milk from cows exposed to it and those who eat seafood like wise exposed. It is simply too heavy to stay airborne for long enough to get to the US from Japan in dangerous quantities.

Rule -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/18/2011 9:22:53 PM)

FR

Cannot them Japanese ask the USA to simply drop one atom bomb on those four derelict reactors during a advantageous strong wind? It would do away with the whole mess. Any uranium and plutonium would either fission due to the released neutrons or be carried out to sea and be dispersed.

The resulting hole in the ground would fill up with sea water and make a nice cove for a harbor in a couple of years.

Edwynn -> RE: Here you go all you nay sayer's latest news on Japan (3/19/2011 2:48:07 AM)

Typical western response.

Another nation suffers serious earthquakes, devastating tsunamis, serious damage to their infrastructure overall, including power outages affecting millions, serious damage and devastation to nuclear power plants, all resulting from a once-in-200-1000-years series of events, -many many kids that had a normal life a week ago now living as refugees and sleeping crowded together on whatever public hard floor the parents can find to put them with out freezing to death or being told, 'you have to move on, there is no room here'-,  14,000 dead or missing thus far, ... and then, some hundred or more workers diving right into the worst of it,  going into a task they know full well is going to shorten their lives significantly, taking the bull by the horns in most heroic fashion ("yes, we know it's a suicide mission, we know what we are doing") for sake of trying to prevent many more lost lives, ...

And all that people in the western countries have to say about any of it is "ewww yuck, don't get any of that crap on my pants leg" ...

Gosh, I feel so proud right now.
