So, this is the way it works. The dog has been around a lot longer then you have and will probably be around long after your gone. So the dog sleeps beside me and you curl up at the foot of the bed.

I do have to give a person half a chance though. If they outlast the dog then they get to "Assume the Position!"

My cat always sleep on my pillow on top of my Head, so there is room for someone next to me.
