Georgia's US Representative Hank Johnson has proposed an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that would make the unemployed yet another protected class. Won't that be interesting when someone walks in to get a loan from the bank?

Hank's website and press release

As a side note, and as a perfectly acceptable alternate conversation within the thread, I give Rep. Johnson the title I do, based on his expressed concerns that additional US forces might cause the island of Guam to tip over and sink. If anybody would care to offer another worthy candidate, I'm sure the discussion and clips would be most entertaining. The contest is open to all currently serving members of the United States House or Senate.

He's going to be tough to beat

I am afraid that at this point I have to agree, I mean Guam tipping over because of the Marines on the island.

Heretic, we only have two real choices:

1. Make the award annual.
2. Retire it in perpetuity.

The Guam rant will never be beaten.

The title can only be held by a serving member, Truck. Now I realize that he was re-elected, after the Guam thing, with 75% of the vote, but that doesn't mean he'll be there forever.

But yeah, even with the subjective standards of partisanship, Hank seems to have a pretty secure grasp, for now.

I agree with you about the Guam thing, but he is not trying to make the unemployed a protected class, as you call it.

He is only trying to end a practice that is keeping the unemployed from being employable.

Yep. But if you think Bachmann or any of the Tea Party freshmen are worthy to get in the ring with him, Tazzy, I'm ready to watch.

Aquaint yourself with the provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, RML. That's how he wants to address the problem.

To be accurate, Tazzy, it would also need to be the official themselves saying something, not an impersonation by a comic. Now if you could find a member of Congress who doesn't know the difference between what Palin said, and what Tina Fey said in character, you might have something.

lol.. it was a joke.

But since you mentioned Michelle...

Bachmann "explained" to the host and Minnesota audience:

* ACORN is "under federal indictment for voter fraud," but the stimulus bill nevertheless gives ACORN "$5 billion." (In reality, ACORN is not under federal indictment and isn't mentioned in the stimulus bill at all.)

* many members of Congress have "a real aversion to capitalism."

* the stimulus bill includes a measure to create a "rationing board" for health care, and after the bill becomes law, "your doctor will no longer be able to make your healthcare decisions with you."

* the recovery package is part of a Democratic conspiracy to "direct" funding away from Republican districts, so Democratic districts can "suck up" all federal funds. Bachmann doesn't think this will work because, as she put it, "We're running out of rich people in this country."

* the "Community-Organizer-in-Chief" is also orchestrating a conspiracy involving the Census Bureau, which the president will use to redraw congressional lines to keep Democrats in power for up to "40 years." When the host said he was confused, noting that congressional district lines are drawn at the state level, Bachmann said Obama's non-existent plan is an "anti-constitutional move."

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/127329/is_michele_bachmann_the_most_idiotic_member_of_congress_/

I truly love the last one. 40 years, with lines redrawn after every census.

Bachmann is a ditz, Tazzy, no doubt about it, but I haven't seen or heard anything that put her in this league.

BTW, have you seen the recent mea culpa from the guy who made that claim about 40 years of Democrat rule?

lol.. I hadnt, thank you for the link, and the laugh.

I like him alot... and not for his political positions.

But the thought of any party ruling for that long gives me the shivers.

I think this whole thing needs to be put in perspective. The civil rights act lays it out and without trying to interpret it too much we have race, gender and creed. Race and creed are not always the same, so they are mentioned separately, gender is easily extended to sexual preference, gender issues and so forth by simple logic.

However if it gets taken much further, into preventing an employer from requiring a solid work history things can get heavy. The way people twist things around especially in this country, it would get to the point where they would have to hire blind people to drive buses. Hey, between this and the ADA, some lawyer with too much time on his hands could figure something out. But that's inmevitable because these things are exactly why the laws are written so,,,, so,,,,, you know what I mean.

This is going nowhere, because it could be used to prevent employers from requiring experience. Many require recent experience. And how to enforce it ? Even equal opportunity cannot really be enforced if you think about it. You don't get a job and sue. You would not only have to prove that you are better qualified than the one hired, but then you also have to prove that you came off better in the interview. Is every job interview to be taped then, and the public will judge the hiring practices of a given firm ? You really want that ? You want a bunch of idiots interfering with the hiring polices of one of the few profitable businesses (must be if they're hiring) left standing in this country ? People who have no conception of how to run a business, who couldn't qualify for the job, much less the position to award the job. They are to decide ?

I agree with the intent, and it could be said that someone who knows their job should know when the hammer is about to come down and start looking before the big boom boom. In theory it is a good thing because as we know by now, loyalty has no mass. It goes up but it doesn't come down. (usually)

There's more to it. Some places won't hire you if you have bad credit. And then some won't hire you if you don't have a phone. Some (some of those for good reason) won't hire you if you don't have a car. Some even say a reliable car, what are they going to do, inspect your car during the interview ?

This is almost a good example of them trying to legislate morality again, but this time it's business morality. The first time this knuckle dragging separatist bigot asshole was in a position to hire anyone, he hired a Black Man. Know why, the only color that matters in business is green. It comes down to mechanics. Stuck in a wheelchair ? Hmm, does the job require standing up ? Read and write at a low scholastic level like most in this country ? Do you need to read and write to do the job ? You better know English though, because my instructions will not be in a foreign language. I am the Man with the money and you will adapt to service me.

No law can truly regulate such things. Even if you don't have a picture ID, so that means I have to pay you under the table. What does that mean ? It goes on my personal income and then ups my SS check if I retire. I'll be getting the max and you get SSI. Nothing, and I mean absiolutely nothing in the world can change things, but people.

T^T

Excellent points, Term.

The frustration he is trying to address is pretty obvious. As employment slowly rises, the people looking to hire have themselves a full blown buyers market, and are making the most of it. Why bring in a guy who is rusty, or a couple years out of date in fast moving fields, when you can have your pick from a litter who are already sharp and up to date?

It comes down to selling yourself. I'm fifty, what do I have to sell ? Experience, even outfield make them know I know my limitations, as well as strengths. Talk about discrimination ? Fifty and breaking into a new field ? Fat chance.

It's a new world, and granted new solutions are needed, but rehashing old ones that didn't ever really work is not the answer.

What Palin said was even dumber than Fey's parody of her, so spare us this constant defense of her.

The problem was recently discussed by a popular economist: http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2011/03/the-stigmatization-of-the-unemployed.html
"..But I’ve seen the bias become far more ingrained over time, reinforced and rationalized by the bizarre way that companies now spec jobs. Whereas in the stone ages they’d hire a competent-seeming individual with some relevant experience, they now look for people who have done exactly the same job at a similar company. This overly narrow hiring spec then leads to absurd, widespread complaint that companies can’t find people with the right skills. That’s bunk..."

It seems the employment process is twisted.  Of course, stupidity can not legislated away. I would give some credit to the congressman for pointing out the problem. Are you sure he is the dumbest. Most congressmen just occupy the seat and raise hand occasionally. Nobody can be sure what their mental state is.
