Erm. Well. Camara Laye is trying to convince his childhood friend, Kouyate Karmoko, to not inform his father about being beaten and having his lunch taken by the older boys at school. Which is kind, but kind of misplaced because, personally, I'd advocate tattling on the misdeeds taking place at school to stop any more of the same behavior.
