DomYngBlk -> The changing face of America (3/25/2011 5:27:30 AM)

Census figures show that the new largest minority in the US are Hispanic-Americans at 16%. I think this new reality will begin to have far reaching effects not only on politics but on race relations themselves. The days of this discussion simply being a Black/White on are gone. It is going to be replaced with a discussion along cultural differences with what I see is a Black/White coalition trying to keep the Hispanic culture from growing in this country. Another thread postulates whether the US is a racist country and it is talked about in Black/White terms as well by most posters. The reality is different and will becoming increasingly different over the next 40 years to the point that Whites will no longer be the majority.

It is a reality we all must face and begin to live with. To actually think we can control this demographic change is silly. To not embrace it and see that it has the power to renew America is also silly. As opposed to both Western Europe and Japan we are an industrialized country that has a growing youth population. This is a good thing! What we need to do is embrace the new cultures around us and celebrate our diversity rather than try to control it.

Although I think being a polyglotte is a nice thing to be, I get a little itchy whe people call my home, and start speaking in Spanish. Probably a resistance I need to overcome. As for the demographics, I consider myself plenty adaptable. Oy, the Novelas....[8D] M

Nope. I am tired of celebrating diversity. I do not think that it is even healthy to do so.

Celebrating diversity means celebrating differences. So first those differences have to be enumerated. Which leads to stereotyping and pigeon-holing people into some one-dimensional view.

It also sets up an Us versus Them mentality. You see it all the time and does not lead to harmony and happiness. It leads to the demonization of the "other."

DYB, Thanks for a nifty link!!

LaTigresse -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 12:17:11 PM)

I am thrilled that the US is getting more diverse and less white. I am thrilled that different cultures are being absorbed into the whole that is the US, creating a new whole.

I do understand the point Aylee is making. Celebrating differences can be a two edged sword with many.

I'm fucked....though I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent....I just never could learn a foreign language...no ear for it,no aptitude for it.Three years of h.s. Spanish(passed the last year by the skin of my teeth) and I can barely count to ten.
Interestingly enough my son who inherited my smarts and his mothers good looks(what a lucky kid, cause my ex was dumb as batshit...and I'm ugly as sin...lol) and recently graduated from NYU on the honor roll....had one subject and one subject only that he struggled with....you guessed it....Spanish,guess he really is mine(well you would have to know my ex to appreciate that one)

I don't, but in Providence, Latinos have become the largest minority group; so if one doesn't live in the suburbs, they often take the liberty of calling your house, and start speaking in Spanish, and I have to say "what?!" before they revert back to English, or hand up.

One day, I turned on my TV/Cable, and it came through with Spanish voice over the channel (not Univision, or any other Spanish language channel). M

If I am correct, according to science,we humans are 99.5% equal.I don't mind if whites become a minority.I just wish this racial "us vs them" non-sense would end on all sides. We are all human beings and we all bleed red.Who cares about someones color? Most of my neighbors are black. This is one of the safest areas I have ever lived in.Stereotypes mean nothing to me.

DomYngBlk -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 2:10:10 PM)

Its diversity that makes this country great. Take last week, we were all Irish for the day. Could go into a Irish bar and see people celebrating their "difference". I am not sure why everyone has to make it seem bad.

popeye1250 -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 2:12:44 PM)

DYB, it's called "Balkanization" just like in Bosnia and Europe and we all know how those things worked and are working.
As a black man go down to Miami and try to get a job on the city, cop, firefighter, teacher, truck/bus driver without being able to speak spanish and see how that works out!
Immigration is out-of-control, there's no other way to put it.

DomYngBlk -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 2:16:00 PM)

I don't know spanish but I am positive I could learn it. We are the only country on earth that is too lazy to learn another language. Its pathetic.

To quote a quadrilingual friend of mine from the Czech Republic,

"Why do [Americans] worry so much about whether or not you should be learning other peoples' languages? You already speak English..."

I do tend to learn a lot of languages. For now I'm semi-fluent in Spanish, functional in Italian and Czech, and know a few words of French and German. That said, I see no reason to look down on those who choose to maintain their mother tongue exclusively. If they are in a position where Spanish (or whatever else) is beneficial to them, they will learn it. If they aren't, why would they?

Learning for its own sake should not be a burden of expectation, but instead a exercise of pleasure. If they don't enjoy it, and they don't need it, they shouldn't learn it.

Its diversity that makes this country great.

No. There is no benefit to status diversity.

Paeans of praise to diversity only started in the 60's. Up until that time It was not considered.

The founding fathers forsaw a homogeneous country.

No we were not.

No, that was an excuse to get drunk. [8|]

Because diversity makes nothing better and is divisive.

Aylee -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 2:51:20 PM)

I will amend my last statement. Diversity does give us good ethnic restaurants. However an excellent Thai restaurant in every city is hardly something to have national concern over.

Aneirin -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 2:58:40 PM)

What is needed, is a common language for all, English is no good, it's too complex, even the Americans have to cut letters out of words to understand them, something else is needed, something that combines many languages already spoken.

Edited to say, the English language has already started the ball rolling on that one, for English is made up of many languages, Germanic and french among them, also a bit of pre saxon conquest.

What do they speak over in England?

Aneirin -> RE: The changing face of America (3/25/2011 3:03:24 PM)

English being the primary language, but there are others from immigrants, and some almost dead languages like Cornish and Welsh.
