Why is it that when you look at profiles, so many women have selected an interest in true crime? What is it about this kind of TV show that is entertaining? Men, typically don't watch these kinds of shows. Why do women?

I have never noticed many people, male or female listing true crime as an interest.  It could be because it is not something I look for when reading profiles.  Now that you have mentioned it I will be more aware.

As far as women liking those shows more than men I can only say this.  Many of my friends watch those types of shows and most are men.  I would think people watch them becaue it's like a mystery.  Many people love reading mystery novels and "who done it" type books.  The TV show is like reading a book in an hour.  It's simple and easy.

It's not about TV shows for me, it's about books. I've been reading "true crime" books since I was about 10, grew up and got 2 of my degrees in behavioral science and criminal justice and continue to remain fascinated with why people commit the crimes they do. Nothing intriguing or secret about it, it's just plain interesting to me..........luci

Greetings,

Perhaps it's merely their fascination with the subject. Many people wonder what goes on in the minds of those that commit heinous crimes. I've watched a few programs in the past, though admittedly i like the high profile cases. No one presented them better than the late Dominick Dunne. There's something about money and crime that makes for one messed up combo that is entertaining on some level. i watch American Greed on occasion now that i'm out of the industry. But it isn't a deep indulgence for me. i encounter enjoy strange fruit on the Internet. i don't need to keep company with it on the telly.

Namaste,

I thought crime shows had universal appeal to subby types because the cast is full of smart people in a position of authority?

sunshinemiss -> RE: True crime (3/31/2011 7:13:55 AM)

Well, heck. Are you kidding? Have you not noticed how fricking hunky the men are on those shows? I mean seriously.... they are buff... and smart... and confident.

The triumverate of "slay the wench".

Admittedly my attraction is a morbid curiosity. When i watched the Ted Bundy footage years ago i was pretty astounded at his barbaric behavior. The mere fact he presented it in such a likable package was rather unnerving. i'd have thought he was appealing to the eye myself. Mind you that taught me a very good lesson at a young age that has kept me out of the barrel's clutches. For the most part i learn a great deal about human nature and just how mucked up some people are. The programs reveal how supposed normalcy can be cloyingly deceiving and lead to some very dire consequences.

On the other hand, the Patty Hearst story has fed my slavery in some very peculiar ways. [;)]

I won't watch real or fictional crime shows. Except NCIS which is a lot less gory than most. Even so, I look away when Ducky is doing an autopsy.

However what is really going on is that a lot of people watch crime shows, fictional and nonfiction, and read the books. And the op is only looking at women's profiles so he notices it there.

Beyond that, women here tend to fill profiles out including other interests whereas men tend to only fill out the sexual/play stuff. It isn't that men don't watch it, but they don't bother to list it.

Dunno. Maybe it's a way of finding out what their ex-husbands are getting up to?

I honestly have no clue why I like them but I do. I also enjoy mystery books and films. But have to agree with Sunshinemiss- the hunky men is a good reason. lol.

I enjoy shows like The First 48 and Crime 360 because they offer a reality based look at both the criminals and police. I'm also intrigued with the workings of a serial killer's mind and what lengths he/she will go to in order to "feed the need".

I don't see this as having anything to do with whether or not a person identifies as dominant of submissive.

In general, human behavior/nature is fascinating.

For the record...I know more than a few police officers who like watching these types of shows (the real life vs fiction/drama shows) for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is a chance to second guess the detective on the show or to solve the case first.

Missokyst -> RE: True crime (4/1/2011 1:25:59 PM)

I am a crime watcher. I read about crime, research crime and view fictual and factual accounts of crime on television. I like it because it fascinates me to see how people's minds work when they are not acting in the norm. I enjoy taking things apart and figuring out why, how, and how I might have done it if I were into illegal activity. Those crime shows teach us a lot. Have you ever noticed how many new criminals are now, wearing gloves, wiping down blood with bleach, or following plots from past crimes?

As a researcher, I see this stuff is wildly informative. As someone who has been a victim a time or two, reseaching crime has given me some good tips on what not to do.
And as for men not listing this as frequently as women might, I think that has more to do with focus. Men tend to list kink items and very low key, non threatening every day interests... perhaps to throw people off the perversions.

..my 2 cents

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: True crime (4/7/2011 2:36:30 PM)

It's not just about TV shows.  I've loved true crime since the tender age of 12 or so.  I read every mafia book, motorcycle gang, serial killers, the whole gamut.  I'm fascinated by the minds behind the action.  The lengths people will go to.  But then I also watch a lot of TV and my nights, since I'm agoraphobic, are planned around what's on the national networks in regards to the fictional crime shows.  NCIS, the 3 CSI's, Blue Blood, The Chicago Code, Criminal Minds.  I could go on, but the list is never ending and I love those type of shows.  But then I also love comedy shows, I run the entire spectrum on what I'll watch.  O and can't forget the cartoons, and the movies.  Love em all.

You're right, I should have known it was a trick. Since when does bath oil smell like soy  sauce?
