Wis. Dems To File First Recall Petitions Against GOP State Sen. Dan KapankeWisconsin Democrats now say they have more than enough signatures to launch a recall of Republican state Sen. Dan Kapanke, in the battle over Gov. Scott Walker's (R) new law curtailing public employee unions. They are filing the petitions today -- less than halfway through the 60-day window for gathering the signatures.

I see Im gonna have to do some research to see what happens next

Nope, you didnt get fooled, Lucy.

http://www.nbc15.com/state/headlines/Democrats_Say_Goal_Met_On_Kapanke_Recall_119054304.html

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- La Crosse-area Democrats say they have collected enough signatures to recall Sen. Dan Kapanke over his vote to curtail collective bargaining for unionized state employees.

Recall organizer Pat Scheller says volunteers have gathered more than 15,500 signatures and will file the petitions in Madison Friday. If approved, it would be only the fifth recall of a Wisconsin state legislator. The Government Accountability Board will determine whether the signatures are valid.

The Republican senator has defended his vote for Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill as a necessary step to balance the budget while minimizing layoffs. Kapanke did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.

The La Crosse Tribune says 19 recall efforts were registered against 16 senators between Feb. 24 and March 2.

Just a minor nit - this is not a recall by petition.  It is a petition to allow a ballot about his recall.

Here's some info on a recall that succeeded, to give you a bit of foundation, Lucy

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-17-2003/recall

It didn't work out at all the way we hoped it would, but Davis really needed to go.

DarkSteven -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/1/2011 7:59:30 PM)

This is a hijack, but the ballotpedia citation claims "The October 2003 election stood out for many reasons, one of them being that in a state that normally votes in favor of Democratic candidates, Republicans on the replacement ballot garnered 54% of the total votes cast for replacement candidates.[1]"

Then it gives a table, and if the two Republicans in the top three have their total added up, I get 62% of the overall vote.  Can anyone resolve the discrepancy, or did the source just add wrong?
Top 3 vote-getters Candidate Party Votes  % Arnold Schwarzenegger Republican 4,206,284 48.58% Cruz Bustamante Democratic 2,724,874 31.47 Tom McClintock Republican 1,161,287 13.41

This is my favorite part.

Apparently he is acting on God's behalf.

More recently, he discussed how he has taken solace in religion, declaring to a Republican crowd that "I'm not ashamed to tell you I've read the Bible more than I ever have," and that Walker also focuses on religion: "How can you go wrong following a leader that obviously gets his mission on this earth?"

And how does Gray Davis have anything to do with the topic at hand other than you trying to put the focus on a Democrat?

TheHeretic -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/1/2011 8:52:56 PM)

Well, RML, Lucy said she was going to have to do some research, I provided her with information and a bit of analysis on a recall effort that succeeded.

What part of that is difficult?

TheHeretic -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/1/2011 9:09:03 PM)

That's a good question, Steve. Maybe they are applying some formula to weed out Schwarzenegger fanboys who didn't know he had politics?

Brain -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/1/2011 10:18:08 PM)

Religion makes people stupid; they become breinwashed and vote Republicam.

People who make blanket statements are stupid.

News to me that we Jews are stupid and vote Republican.

There's gotta be a joke in here about Brain claiming other people are brainwashed..... I just can't see it.  [:(]

mnottertail -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 6:11:19 AM)

I can't help it, but I have to consumate this joke, even at the peril of my moderation, it's how I'm built.

So DS, ARE YOU SAYING THAT Jews are stupid, but they DON'T vote republican?

[:D]

(Oh, god, please help me thru this one, and I promise I will help myself thru the next one.)

DarkSteven -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 6:28:57 AM)

I'm too stupid to understand your question, Ron.  Could you try translating it into Hebrew?

Seriously, Jews tend to vote Democratic reliably (although W tried to make inroads into the Jewish vote with some success), and we tend to be pretty well educated.

mnottertail -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 6:37:23 AM)

Ja, seem like normal folks to me, ones I know (not every jew has told me that they are of a jewish religion, same being true of catholics and episcopalians, I must confess, and there was not enough Bertillion measurements taken in their recent troubles, to define them,  that they can be spotted right off), and there may be republicans amongst them, and stupid folks amongst them, some very rich, some very dirt poor, but this sort of smacks of an overreaching perjorative haste to malign some segment of the american population broadcloth, which is not only futile, but as inaccurate as saying that Reagan singlehandedly destroyed the Soviet Union.

The process is pretty simple from here on. First the petition signatures are verified (they have to be from registered voters in the district), In this case twice as many signatures were gathered as are needed so it should be a simple matter. Then an election is scheduled and candidates go through the normal process to get on the ballot (I'm pretty sure there won't be a party primary).

I expect the biggest issue in getting rid of these Senators will be each will run stalking horses to dilute the anti vote.

servantforuse -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 7:37:34 AM)

He isn't recalled just yet. Now the folks who filed the recall petition have to find a democrat to run against Kapanke in an election which will probably be in June. Good luck with that..

mnottertail -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 7:39:19 AM)

I am betting he is already (and for some time has been) found.

tazzygirl -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 7:43:13 AM)

Im willing to bet more than one democrat is waiting in the wings and ready to take up the challenge.

TheHeretic -> RE: 1st Repub Recalled? (4/2/2011 7:43:39 AM)

No doubt about that, Ron. They might even need an arm wrestling contest to decide which one gets the official okey-dokey to be da man.
