Washington (CNN) - Those who have followed President Obama's stance on which court is appropriate to try accused terrorists can be forgiven for getting a severe case of whiplash.

After all, it was candidate Obama in 2008 who made clear he intended to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility within a year of his presidency and put an end to military commissions there – the proceedings that extend only limited trial rights to accused terrorists. Then, it was President Obama who quickly signed an order calling for Guanatanomo's close while his Justice Department soon vowed that, in the interest of justice, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and other alleged 9/11 terrorists will be tried in civilian courts.

But three years later – the same day Obama formally announced his reelection bid – Attorney General Eric Holder announced the alleged 9/11 terrorists will in fact not be tried in a civilian court but instead in a military trial at Guantanamo – the same court in the same facility Obama long ago promised would be shuttered.

It was a prediction none other than former Vice President Dick Cheney – an ardent defender of the use of military commissions – made shortly into Obama's presidency: "I think the president will find, upon reflection, that to bring the worst of the worst terrorists inside the United States would be cause for great danger and regret in the years to come," he said during a speech to the American Enterprise Institute in 2009.

Yes, Republicans and Democrats both were forced to give Obama (can we begin calling him 'whiplash' yet?) a reality check.

While campaigning, Obama made rafts and rafts of lofty promises which werent based in reality. The man didnt have a fucking clue, he had no experience in governance. Now we see how, three years later, he is finally getting a few chunky clues shoved down his throat.

Either or Rich. My question was because I was wondering if President Obama was indeed shifty ( as presented by the thread title ) Or if it was the legislature that stopped him from doing as promised. If it was the later, then President Obama didnt break his word.

Considering Obama has done a 180 on just about everything he campaigned on, one would hope for another 180 after winning in 2012 - that should put him on a 360 heading.

Not that I agree with the original theory,but I am curious do you,Firm often get dizzy simply from one spin ?
I would get that checked out,it could be indicative of an inner ear problem.

Well, Polite, I have certain qualms about folks who think claiming incompetence is a valid reason to keep their jobs. If I hire a mechanic to replace the water pump on my car, him telling me, "oh, yeah, I forgot the gasket seal when I put on the new one," doesn't make him likely to get the job re-doing the cylinder head.

There are a few ways to look at this. None of them say anything positive. A) He was clueless when he made the pledges about Guantanamo and the detainees, spouting idealism based in ignorance, and now knows better, but lacks the courage to say so. B) He was lying all along, this has been nothing but a show, with all that says about such a politician. C) He wanted to, and he really tried, and feels really bad that he just wasn't good enough, but he promises to try even harder if we give him four more years as the most powerful man on the planet. Really! He will!

That's not incompetence if he was not allowed to follow through on what he intended. If I had the intention and plan to go out on a friday night, and my mother tells me I can't, does that mean I lied about what I was going to do? As much as I like the idea of "well, if its a good idea (despite if we the people consider it a good idea or not), we all will go along with it, regardless of what party we are with" being the attitude of congress or the senate, that is never the case- good idea, bad idea, "wtf?" idea- doesn't matter. I'm just waiting for next week so there can be something else about what Obama "did, did not do, lied about...etc". He's like Jan from the "Brady Bunch"- everything is their fault.

Look, figure it out people. GITMO and the real, very profitable and world scaring 'War on Terror'...will NEVER end. Presidents will follow orders...or they die. Our constitution is under attack here and does not apply offshore at all.

This problem is bi partisan the repubs just much more gleefully...go along, at least since Reagan. He did not want Bush I as VP at all. 6 months later, there they are.

Reagan did NOT want to play ball. 69 days later...he was shot (and oh...by yet another troubled lone wolf) He played ball. Obama is following orders because he wants to...stay alive.

All of this partisan rant is by design and we could elect Mary fucking Poppins and yet she would not close GITMO. She would double down on Afghanistan and perpetuate the stagnation of the politcal, social and financial advancement of Iraq, leaving it a chaotic, dependent state.
