After having a look at that a picture popped up in my head. It is that of a bumper sticker I saw a long time ago that said : DON'T STEAL THE GOVERNMENT HATES COMPETITION T^T

I went to Disneyland many years ago. Disneyland had its own currency, with pictures of Mickey, Goofy, etc., on the bills. The denominations were equivalent to ten, twenty, etc. dollar bulls, and were tied to the US dollar. Obviously, Disney uses a fiat currency, but still, I have a hard time understanding why Nothaus' actions are illegal. And if course, why he deserves the conviction when jails are overcrowded.

FR Disney issues the "currency" to be used only within the borders of the park, using such as tickets, as one uses tickets at a street festival to by food/drinks, but less mundane and more fancy to have them emulating a currency. If Disney attempted to pay their employees and vendors likewise, then there would certainly be legal trouble beyond mere carping of the recipients. The person involved in this case intended no such limitation and specifically proposed it for use as currency. The law is clear on the prohibition of such, I guarantee you he was well aware of it, and he fooled himself into thinking he had a legal workaround of some sort a la the constitutional/sovereignty/common law etc. grounds that some people attempt to use to openly not pay taxes. Being that the law concerning coinage also overlaps with counterfeit laws in this case, the fellow had no chance. I would put a good many thousand first occasion drug offenders well ahead of this idiot in the get out of jail que.

During my lifetime, the coal companies in West Virginia paid miners in company money that could be redeemed only at company stores. Of course, the coal companies were good buddies with the government so I guess the government never noticed the violation of that civil war law
