Soros’s memories of anti-Semitism in wartime Hungary prompted him, in 1979, to begin providing financial support for black students at the University of Cape Town in apartheid South Africa. In 1984, Soros created an education and culture foundation in Hungary. He later supported dissident movements in Eastern Europe’s other Communist countries, helping people to organize themselves at a time when popular organizations were banned, to voice their opinions when dissonant opinions were considered anti-state propaganda, and to promote tolerance, democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law when a one-party dictatorship exercised a monopoly on power.

As the East bloc crumbled during the late 1980s and the Soviet empire collapsed in the early 1990s, Soros expanded his funding in an effort to help create open societies in all of the region’s countries. He demonstrated his commitment to critical thinking and democratic political development by establishing Central European University in 1991. In 1993, he founded the Open Society Institute. Over the past three decades, Soros’s philanthropy has spawned a network of foundations dedicated to promoting development of open societies in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. To date, Soros has given over $8 billion to support human rights, freedom of expression, and access to public health and education in 70 countries.

All those good works and good deeds ,bravely and unselfishly accomplished, but just b/c George gave some money to Media Matters or whatever,he`s gets the right`s scorn.

Hey Pops, what have you done to get in to heaven?[8|]

It`s not so strange that Soros`enemies and protagonists should come together to attack him.nazis, commies, fascists, dictators, thugs and scumbags,......and now republicans.

Birds of a feather, flock together.

Soros allegedly worked for Nazis as a young man. Also, he actually thinks he is God. The last may disqualify him for Heaven. A passage in his book The Alchemy of Finance ( published in 1987): "I have always harboured an exaggerated view of my self-importance,’. ‘To put it bluntly, I fancied myself as some kind of god or an economic reformer like Keynes, or, even better, like Einstein. My sense of reality was strong enough to make me realize that these expectations were excessive, and I kept them hidden as a guilty secret. This was a source of considerable unhappiness through much of my adult life. As I made my way in the world, reality came close enough to my fantasy to allow me to admit my secret, at least to myself. Needless to say, I feel much happier as a result.”Why should anybody care anyway? Most his money is stolen (he is a gangster), giving a small percentage of it for good cause (for Soros to feel more important) is no big deal.

Amazing. Just fucking amazing. What a fucking cesspool this country has become.

stellauk -> RE: Who thinks George Soros is going to heaven? (4/7/2011 9:39:57 PM)

Could the general neocon distaste for Soros have anything to do with his anti-Bush campaigns and also his involvement in the Polish Solidarity movement in furthering the split in the late 1990's?

His involvement in this split scuppered the plans of the International Republican Institute in replacing the former communist system with a fundamentalist Christian theocracy giving them a satellite of power in Eastern Europe.

This explains the short and largely unsuccessful political career of Lech Walesa who upon taking power proceeded to unceremoniously betray the Polish people through selling off Polish industry, encouraging the flood of Western consumer goods, and closing down the PGR collective farms condemning hundreds of thousands of Poles to abject poverty and destitution.

I'm personally very grateful to Mr Soros, because it was the likes of people such as Marek Edelmann, Aleksander Hall and Adam Michnik who were influential in my own success in Poland.

This explains why Bush nominated Poland as an ally prior to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to the time when the Kaczynski twins took power, in 2005 via the Polish Law and Justice party forming both the government in the Sejm with the late Lech Kaczynski as President.

This also explains the flood of cheaper Polish migrant workers to the British Isles around the time of the accession, supported actively by Tony Blair and New Labour, who gave wildly inaccurate figures as to the number of Poles in the UK, which has destabilized and changed for the worse our own domestic employment market. Tony Blair of course being erm.. Bush's closest ally in the war on terrorism.

Interesting also how the political situation in Poland has been similar to that in the US with the far right Law and Justice refusing to respect the Citizen's Platform's Donald Tusk and Bronislaw Komorowski.

But I guess any destabilization of the US employment market and economy by the current Republicans and their open hostility towards Obama is purely coincidental.

Your post, Panda, has inspired me to make a donation to the Save the Pandas Fund!

Such a shame the odious sentiments you highlighted in another's post need to be pointed out at all. While I am not kindly disposed towards billionaires as a rule, my guess is Soros has more than squared his account with posterity.

sounds like he would come in handy today in america where dissonant opinions are considered anti-state (conspiracy theory) propaganda, and to promote tolerance, democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law when a two-party dictatorship exercised a monopoly on power.

I saw an Infographic on Soros vs the Koch Bros at The Other 98% site on Feb 16, 2011.  (It's now found on page 2 there)
If  heaven and hell exist, definitely my bets would be on Soros going to heaven and the Koch Boys going to Hell.

Edwynn -> RE: Who thinks George Soros is going to heaven? (4/8/2011 5:03:17 AM)

You beat me to it. I was going to mention the union busting bag party sponsoring brothers who's various businesses all rely heavily on government subsidies (oil, agro, etc.) and eminent domain land theft for their private pipe lines and free grazing of their dairy herds on federal land and free harvesting of trees on federal property with tax paid roads, etc.

Lloyd Blankfein is another hero of Soros haters. In fact it's hard to think of any hero of the Soros haters that does not rely heavily on siphoning money from the Treasury either directly or indirectly as a significant part of their business plan. Not difficult to spot the pattern here, and possibly explaining why some people hate Soros so much.

He made his money by being good at what he does, instead of by having an Alaska pipe line sized flow of tax money into his private accounts, as is the case with the oil and financial and agro-chem industries, all of which Koch bros. take full advantage.

Being a billionaire on one's own account is just inexcusable. I can see why the rabid right thinkers despise Soros so much. He goes against the established pattern of making his money off of taxpayers (without exception, the rabid right prefer giving more money to those whom we've already given billions to. I suppose it's the element of familiarity). Warren Buffet is also much despised by this same group, and for the same reason.
