Actually, marc, I have seen accounts where some Amerind tribes revered these people. They were seen as a midpoint between the male and the female and thus, by extension, a midpoint between the living and spirit worlds.

This would make them very powerful shamans (I don't know if that is proper plural of shaman). A band with what was percieved as a powerful shaman gained great status among the neighboring group of bands and was also less likely to be attacked because of this percieved power with the spirit world.

This, of course, a legend and tale because the Plain's Indians had no written language.

I've heard that some tribes simply allowed homosexual men to live as women. That is, they did women's "work" rather than fulfill masculine roles (I don't know how they dealt with gay women). The truth is that such attitudes probably varied from tribe to tribe. People today have a tendency to lump the Native Americans together but they were not a mono-culture by any stretch of the imagination.

During the 1990's the term "Two Spirit" was made somewhat popular, especially here in Denver. More at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit

I happen to think the study is incorrect.  I find that 1.7% would be entirely too low.  I've also thought that the 10% estimation was probably too high.  PA probably got it right at somewhere around the 3-5% range.

If we take the number for what it is, instead of trying to read more into it. It might be dead right. In presumably well-conducted surveys that asked for orientation, 1.7% of the population will indentify as gay.

What we don't have, is a solid number of how many gays won't identify.

The fact that it would be of enough concern to propel one to actually do such a study in the first place, or to report it later, precludes the possibility of there not being something 'read into it' from the outset.

Gates is the first to admit his figures are imprecise.

But because so few national population surveys have asked about sexual orientation and the ones that have were not conducted consistently over time, the data on which to base a firm conclusion does not exist, he said.

What I am reading is his own statements which claim the work isn't accurate.

I don't think there is much hope for you, Edwy. Statistics you don't like should never be compiled to begin with? Who should be making these decisions about what data can, and cannot, be looked at?

What a mess.  Not only does the author of the "study" not stand in back of his own results, it defines gay in way too stark terms. It does not allow for

bis
people who tried it once and liked it but won't do it again
trans
straight but bi-curious
etc.

We need a movie making fun of the whole thing.  Maybe about a man who wants to make it as a fashion designer and is forced to keep his heterosexuality in the closet to be taken seriously....

And it still boils down to the fact that any and all studies to try to determine what percentage of the world's population identifying as gay will never be accurate. All the best researches will still only have a guesstimate to whether the numbers are 10% or 1-2% of the population. Personally, I feel that it is a trivial matter wanting to know what percentage are gay and what percentage aren't. All that really matters is we exist and are a viable part of society.

What, herwee?

I'm not sure if you were calling me or not, the baby food spittle dripping out of your mouth preventing clear speech from you there.

Are you trying to respond to me with an insult, Edwy? Isn't that precious!
