Isn't that "Boehner"...I mean lets make sure the credit(or in this case the blame)goes to the right guy.And yes it is his responsibility to get the tea baggers in line...to explain to them that this is actually the big leagues.....and that there are indeed consequences.

I was not joking. Just a common sense. Are you claiming the car engine consumes more gasoline when not running (mostly on idle producing nothing of value)? I agree in principle, it could cost more. However, only because the government plays with public money and wastes it as it wishes. Obama is a horror story, worse than G.W.B. There is only a small fraction of the government operations that is necessary. Big part is just a waste. How for example, how  would it cost more if US Army takes a day off and relaxes instead of shooting cruise missiles into foreign territory for 100 mil. Or 800,000 people (as estimated by Washington Post) who get paid for spying on Americans (illegal activity) would relax for few weeks without pay... and so on..... Not speaking most people working for the government are over-payed anyway. If you do the research and math you will be very likely shocked what you will find.

Not evil at all, why do they need to be?

Westinghouse and GE and Murdoch and others such like give us all the info they think we need, to make our 'informed' decisions, n'est ce pas?

If one wanted a 'solution' guaranteed to perpetuate the problem, one could not do better than to have the problem causers incessantly proposing their solutions to us. Which is to say the media.

Do some homework on media ownership, as time or inclination provides.


In the meantime, the comment did bring this particular teen 'editorial opinion' to mind concerning 'evil,' where a broader perspective is rendered; "well ... he's 'good' bad, but he's not evil" @ ~ .48 into the video.

Wrong technological object in the metaphor, you see....

Think of a bessemer furnace, something used in the production of tons of molten metal. They take a shitload of energy to run. So, by your logic, shutting it down overnight would save money, right?

Wrong. That would cost an even bigger shitload of money. The problem is, that starting the damn thing is when a disproportionate amount of energy is used. So, shutting it down, far from being a cost saving measure, is in fact a good way of pissing money down a rope.

Now, i'm not sure of the exact calculation......but you are correct in a sense. If the shut down is of a sufficient length it can offset the start up cost. However, then you have to factor in all the benefits of having the thing running. After all, you may save money by not running the furnace......but you're not making any either.

Governments, despite the ideology, do a lot of useful things. One of which is to pay the military. To shut down government long enough to actually offset the cost of restarting it, how long are you prepared to not pay your military?

A day? A week? A month? Six months?

The devil is in the details. It's an excellent phrase. The devil is that which ones given ideology says is wrong. Details often mean we have to compromise our ideals. The current spirit of anti-compromise in US domestic politics is the problem, not the solution.
