I came across this on facebook and thought it was interesting.

quote:

Dear government ,

If you feel the need to stop paying our military personnel then i think you should feel the need to stop paying yourselves! I'd like to see you try to support your family without a paycheck! By the way maybe if you take your pay down to $100K it would help some of the budget issues in America. I'd like to see you survive on enlisted military personnel pay!

The current salary (2011) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year.

Military paychecks are not,as far as I am aware,in danger of being interrupted.Neither or Medicare/aid payments and SS checks.

Actually, mike, that isn't correct.  We've been discussing this in My household because the potential does exist.

if the tea party wack-jobs want to shut the government down, let them do it...no-one gets paid. The troops run out of ammo, let the "patriot's" send them bullets...its all on Republican conscience , oh, that's right, they don't have such things, that's how the sleazeballs   can do this.  And no, BONER should not get paid either!

Interesting, do all military activities stop?  Qaddafi should be happy.

I couldn't say.  We were actually discussing what would happen if it came to pass for April first.  As you and I were discussing on the other side, we had additional expense just recently, so we were more than a bit concerned.

The budget still hasn't been passed.  We really don't know at this time if MP will get paid mid-month.

It was/has been my understanding that unless this goes the unthinkable(like into months)the only federal employees affected are those termed non-essential.Military personnel are not considered non-essential.As I said that is simply my understanding... ...it doesn't happen often but once in awhile I get something wrong.
I hope, for yours and all military families sake, this is not one of those rare occurrences

This part is just My personal opinion.  I see part of this not passing the budget as a bit of grandstanding.  At the eleventh hour, there will be some kind of bipartisan agreement reached so they can pat themselves on the back.  It's the kind of stuff that makes headlines and pulls some weight with voters for the next election.

I would love to see these doucebags stop getting their pay. They won't do their fucking job and all they do is put on a show and try to keep their seats. But the sad part of it is that it would not do a thing for the country. Shaving that $93 million off the budget would not even be a drop in the bucket.

I know they have told the reserves not to expect to be paid. That didn't surprise me. The idea that they think it is "essential" for them to do their weekend thing is confusing. I thought they were closing everything they don't really need.

Had the shutdown occurred, military personnel would have stopped receiving paychecks but would have continued to earn pay.  Once the shutdown had ended, they would receive a mega-paycheck to cover all back-pay.

Federal employees furloughed by the shutdown for at least a full week would have been eligible to collect unemployment insurance benefits in most states for each full week the government remained shut down.

Congressional pay is part of a different, multi-year spending program, so it would not be affected by a shutdown.

At the eleventh hour, when Boehner came out and made his announcement, I had to smile to myself and think of your post.  You were spot on, LadyPact!!   However, I heard Reid say the gov't remains opened until Thursday, when they finish their negotiations.  And what that means exactly, I don't know with the unstableness of the republicans (and dems, too).  But you were indeed right when it came to the shut down last night, and I will be following anything you say, if the budget isn't ironed out satisfactorily on both sides by Thursday. (Since you really are so insightful!)

Even we simple military wives get things right once in a while.

I'll be dreading the campaign ads that speak of the incumbents who will be running for re-election in the future.  I can hear it now.  "Voted to avoid the military spending crisis!"  As if not passing a budget under the wire wouldn't have been political career suicide.

Yes, as another poster said, all active duty military personnel would have been entitled to back pay.  Which is great.  They would get paid...... eventually.  That doesn't stop the house note from coming due.  Or the car note.  Not the electric or the gas.  When that supposed "mega-check" came in, how much of it would have been eaten up in late payment fees?  It wouldn't just have been the direct folks not getting paid.  It would be everyone that those who are in the military do business with.  The renters, the banks, the small businesses in the local economies.  There is definitely a ripple effect.

I know a lot of folks aren't happy with military spending.  I see the excesses just like the rest of you.  Not paying the people who are doing the job just isn't one of them.

Talk about the military eh ? Well when the places I work for run out of work I am out of work. When I go back I get paid. I don't get paid for every fucking day that I fucked off, got high and got into trouble. And I don't get PERS, but I hear they are dismantling that. GOOD, let their minions know that their masters cannot be trusted. That is a very important step in dismantling this bunch of shit.

Think I'm kidding ?
